Love Letter: The Best Ever Love Letter You Can Write

When was the last time you wrote a love letter?

Photo by John Jennings on Unsplash

You know, a love letter to your sweetheart, the person who makes your heart sing and eyes sparkle when they walk into the room?

Have you even ever written a love letter?!

Maybe you sneaked a quick text to your sweetheart when no one was looking.

Or, you went all out and sent a large red love balloon to say “I love you”, to your spouse.

Perhaps you are so used to sending text messages you Googled “how to write a love letter” as your new partner means that much to you!

Now, let’s switch things up a bit.

Suppose you wrote a love letter to yourself!?

Yeah. That’s right.

Suppose you wrote a love letter to yourself!?

What would that be like?

What would you say?

I know what you’re thinking:

“whaaat?!”

“write a love letter to myself — why would I do that?”.

You are happy to take selfies, but to write a love letter to yourself, that’s just weird!

That’s what I thought when I came across the journal prompt in The Five Minute Journal to ‘write a love letter to yourself and say everything you love about yourself.’

I could feel my resistance rising.

I am happy to write books, poems, and even an 3,000 word ultimate guide to help you relieve lower back pain, but to write a love letter to myself - that felt totally out of my league!

‘Where would I start?’

‘What would I say?’

I couldn’t get my mind around this prompt and pushed it out of my mind!

However, you know what it’s like, the things we ignore are the exact thing we need to address.

I pondered.

‘What was I ignoring?’

‘Why was I so resistant to writing a love letter to myself?’

It was a simple task.

No one need read it.

I could write those magical three words “I love you” and leave it at that.

Yet, the more I sat and mulled over this self-explanatory task, the more I realised I had to do this.

It felt like an act of self-love and something I HAD to do for myself.

Truth be told, I didn't know where to start, or what to say.

Can you identify with that?

If you had to write a love letter to yourself, what would you say?

What would you write about?

Meditation to the Rescue

As per usual, anytime I feel anxious and not sure what to do, I breathe and turn to my daily meditation practice for counsel.

So, I sat and meditated.

After my practice, I took up my pen, wrote the journal prompt:

“write a love letter to yourself and say everything you love about yourself”…

and scribbled what was in my heart.

It was an emotional experience, as I realised how much I have healed from my past hurts and how much I now deeply love myself.

It was wonderful.

I felt powerful.

Liberated and free.

And I want to share this moment with you.

To encourage you to strengthen your self-love muscle and notice what is bubbling under your self-love radar.

So, I invite you to take a moment, keep an open mind when you read my self-love letter and remember it is MY self-love letter to say everything I love about myself.

Journal Prompt: Write A Love Letter To Yourself And Say Everything You Love About Yourself

And here is what I wrote…

Dear Ntathu

I love the way you express yourself, the way you care about others and desire to always step out of your way to help others.

I love your smile, the way your eyes crinkle up when you laugh and the way you rock backwards and forwards and clap your hands when something makes you laugh.

I love you more than you will ever know.

Your gentle way of being in the world, creating, spreading warmth and light wherever you go; like a roaring fire on a cold winter’s night.

I love your determination to shed layers of past hurt, to rise above the forest and find a tree to hug; the way you inch forward, peak around the bushes and take a friend along their next step.

I love the way you walk, head held high, eyes on the prize and feet gently caressing the Earth.

I love you more and more each day and want to wake up with you by my side; to share our last meal together before you leave this world and keep you safe and warm.

I love you.

Thank you for caring about me and giving me your best.

I love you. Ntathu

what are your thoughts about my love letter to myself?

I have reread my letter several times and each time my eyes crinkle and I feel a warm glow spread through my heart.

Isn't that delightful?

Isn't a love letter you write to yourself, the best love letter you’ll ever receive?

I think so.

What do you think?

In fact, if you’ve never written a love letter to yourself, read on…

What Next?

Now that I’ve taken the first step, written a love letter to myself and shared my love letter to myself with you, will you do the same?

Will you sit quietly and write yourself a love letter?

Could you serenade and romance your soul and tell yourself how loving, kind and great you are?

I encourage you to take a moment and do just that.

Write a love letter to yourself and say everything you love about yourself.

And, if you feel brave, share your love letter to yourself here, as your words might well be the tonic someone going through a hard time, needs to hear.

Who knows, if we get enough love letters I could compile them into a story! And then that will be the Best Ever Love Letter!
