Love is Greater Than Faith

The Bible says so

I remember when I was growing up in the church, we used to sing a song that said, “They will know we are Christians by our love.” Today, it’s the opposite in most cases: Christians are known for hate. Worse, some Christians are okay with that.

I’ve literally had conservative Christians try to tell me that love is not the most important thing and that if I focus on love I will fall into error. Respectfully: no. Love is the most important thing. Love is greater than hope. Love is greater than faith.

And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13:13 NKJV

Evangelical Christians claim to follow every word of the Bible, and the Bible says plainly that love is greater than faith.

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:34–35, NIV)

Jesus didn’t suggest that we love; Jesus commanded that we love.

1 Corinthians Chapter 13

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body [a]to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.

Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not [b]puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.

When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.

And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

1st Corinthians chapter 13 is a very popular part of the Bible, but it seems that conservative Christians must miss the point of verse 13: “And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” Love is greater than hope and faith. The Bible says so.

I don’t know how you can read that any other way.

I could name so many televangelists who are clanging cymbals. They may speak in tongues, and do signs and wonders, but if they have no love, they are noisy, strident, and annoying. I imagine Jesus wishes they would just shut up already. I sure do.

though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 1 Corinthians 13:2b

Faith is nothing without love. I am nothing if I don’t love. I can have “all faith” and still be nothing if I don’t have love.

What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. James 2:14–17

Love is action. Love is works. Love is feeding the hungry and clothing the naked. And faith without love is dead.

I fear that the Evangelical Christian faith is dead. When we are quicker to condemn those we deem sinners than we are to love people, we have lost our way.

We must fall on our knees and beg God’s forgiveness for failing to love as we were commanded to love. We must return to our roots, to love. We must reorient ourselves to Jesus and to love.

We must love.

Esther learned to read when she was four years old, and began writing shortly thereafter. She is a queer Christian poet, crafting with words to create art and music.
