Love is a Dance

The lovers

The Lovers — Rider-Waite Tarot deck — photo by author

This card is set in a rather barren Garden of Eden. The Tree of Life sprouts behind a naked Adam. Eve stands, minus fig leaves, in front of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, while a snake slithers sinuously up its trunk. The couple are turned slightly towards each other, their body pose almost a question.

If I put words to this illustration they would be:

‘Shall we dance?’

Whether it will be a lively swing dance, a sultry tango, or a mixture of the two, is up to Adam and Eve. The blazing sun and angelic being bestowing a blessing can’t do anything once feet start tapping and life starts happening. Ultimately, it’s up to them. What will they do?

The world is packed with people trying to find a soul mate, kindred spirit or the other half of themselves. And when they find that person, they want to dance the dance of life, and they want that dance to be good.

But as the saying goes, it takes two to tango. It takes two people to make a relationship work.

Watch a couple swing dance or tango. The two people seem to be connected with an invisible elastic string that pulls them towards or around each other, then flings them away, their bodies expressing passion or conflict or fun as they flex and spin.

For the dance to remain interesting, the two participants must always express themselves. If one dancer merely become a mirror for the other, the reason for them being a part of the dance is lost. They’ve lost sight of their reason for being there. The fire of the connection fizzles out. The dance winds down.

The term ‘lovers’ is a noun with strong verbal overtones. Lovers love. Lovers do things with each other. Both of them dance the dance of life.

There are always two people. No matter how entwined they become, there are still always two.

Never lose yourself in another.

You’re here for a reason. Live that reason. Dance that reason. Choose a lover and do a dance together but don’t lose your self in the dance. Never lose sight that you’re here to dance your self.

Mindfulness and the Lovers

When the Lovers card appears in a spread for you, don’t get excited thinking it means a tall, dark stranger is going to come into your life and carry you off on a white horse to magical lands.

This card is asking: What will you bring to the relationship?

Insight

The visionary dancer Martha Graham said:

Dance is the hidden language of the soul.

As a lover, express your soul. That’s what love is all about.

As a lover, give your self. But don’t give your self away.

The next article in this series will feature the Chariot.

Foretaste: Act on your intentions

The previous article in this series on Tarot cards and Mindfulness, explains you are the link between the known and the unknown, the revealed and the hidden.
