Sacrifice

Would you do penance for a lost soul?

Photo by engin akyurt on Unsplash

I have a heart that beats cold as ice

Cut you sharply to the quick

Take your breath away in that instant

She sees your gaze slyly go astray

I long for that connection reflection

A heart that beats those weathered conga drums down

Dance to the beat of just about any drummer

Premiere my lovely self in bright, blazing summer colors

Oh, those years of giving it all away

Never once a thought of myself

Like a bird flying high amid deep blue cloudy skies

Taking crumbs from your bloody, battered beak

See through the weary eyes of my troubled soul

Inside I have nothing, nada, nil

It was hammered out of me from an early age on

Till I had nothing but the bridge of a ragged tortoise shell

You walk in my life like you can change the world

Bending every interconnected structure of my brain

Go ahead, big boy, why don’t you give it a twirl

I’ll cha cha you right out of the dance floor

I want a different story, a brand new tune

Let’s start at the end, and find the beginning

Create a thundering symphony of beautiful noise

Finally clashing and clanging at the end of the line

Show me what you’ve got

Give it your best shot

Tame the bellowing beast inside

That crudely screams your name and hides

Can you break the ice that courses through my veins

Stop the bleed, spare my heart once or twice

Is it possible at this late stage of the darkest night

To become the savior you always wanted me to be

Can you see through the murky masks that hide my face

See the truth that hides like a monster lurking inside

Can you unbreak this heart of stone with your flaming sword

Rise up, take your toys, seek shelter from St. Elmo’s storm
