Love and the Valentine’s Blues

Songs about Love that hit me hard, challenge. Lucy Socha

I saw Lucy Socha’s article, here, hence the above title, and had to think for a moment. Everyone has favorite love songs. It is one of the world’s most treasured gifts, love songs.

It is most often when music is accompanied by meaningful lyrics that someone, somewhere on the other listening end of that song is receiving a message and becoming inspired to express their love toward another in the form of a song. It has been a long time “thing” that couples have a “song.” What couple do you know does not have a song, in fact, most couples dance to their song at their wedding.

The songs I have chosen are not love songs specific to me or any personal relationship I have had. I just find the melody and lyrics healing and expressed beautifully in the following five songs. Enjoy!

  1. Can’t Help Falling In Love written by Elvis, but performed by UB40. Personally, I have always thought this would make a great wedding song and have always imagined one day dancing to this song at my wedding. I am currently single, so this could still happen!!

The beat is upbeat and fun and it may not be for everyone, but I like it.

2. “Throwing it all Away” by Genesis. I think this song is beautifully written and the lyrics are basically a conversation that most of us have had at some point silently or at least in a memory they wish they had had. This song definitely fits into the loss category. Did the title already tell you that? Sorry about that.

Wasn’t that bittersweet?

3. “Purple Rain” by Prince. This ballad was accompanied by a theme song to a movie named the same and also featured Prince, himself, as an actor. I was probably about 17 years old when this song was played last at almost every dance. I guess for me, it qualifies as a beautiful love song.

Yeah, that was Prince, he was pretty cool. He was a very talented musician and artist.

4. “Nobody Loves Me Like You Do” performed by Whitney Houston and Jermaine Jackson. I have always found this song to be such a powerful duet on love. So many beautiful lyrics in this song sung by two amazing artists.

After listening to it again, it almost has a country twang to it. Hope you find something special here as I did.

5. “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” performed by Elton John & George Michael. First of all, the song itself is powerful alone, but put these two artists together and you can just feel the music right on through to your soul. Take a listen and see if it happens for you.

I still get chills when I hear this. Although I usually do play it quite loudly, so that probably helps. And there you have it, my all-time five favorite love, loss or love blues songs.

With this, I now tag Brett Jenae Tomlin, Art Bram, Sophie Grace, Brandon Ellrich, JB Hollows & Kimberly J Fitzgerald. Hope you’ll join in the fun!
