Lost in the Magic of Christmas Morning
I Stood in Awe Before Our New Tree.
Christmas morning always holds a certain magic.
My heart was filled with childlike wonder as winter light filtered through the curtains.
Walking outside, I saw light snow falling, dusted with powdered sugar.
I slipped into my waiting slippers and wrapped myself in my cozy robe. Snowy mornings in the neighborhood were shrouded in muffled hush.
I smiled, imagining the faint crunch of my footsteps breaking the silence as I’d soon tread out to the mailbox.
But first — the tree. I eagerly entered the living room, soaking in all the holiday splendor surrounding the evergreen. Each ornament glowed with the soft glow of the lights. And there, on the skirt around the tree's base, sat a few modest gift boxes waiting to be opened.
I settled onto the sofa with a happy sigh, letting my gaze travel to the shining star at the top.
This tree held many sweet memories, both from this year and from holidays past.
Each ornament represented special people or moments in my life. And this year, there were a few new additions to the collection…
I smiled at the handmade felt gingerbread men, a gift from my young niece. They dangled brightly next to the glass ballerina I’d received from my grandmother decades ago.
Nearby hung the delicate glass cardinal, its ruby red color glowing. My best friend had gifted me the ornament this year. Knowing Cardinals always makes me think of my late father.
My heart felt full as I reflected on the year that was now coming to a close. There had been challenges, certainly, as there always are. But the blessings had far outweighed any hardships.
I was grateful to the dear souls who light up my life daily. And I whispered a heartfelt thanks for the gift of memories made in 2023.
I noticed the aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafting in from the kitchen. My wonderful husband must be up!
I reluctantly drew myself away from my nostalgic moment under the tree and headed to join him.
Over mugs of steaming coffee, we chatted about our plans for the day: the walks we’d take, friends we hoped to see, and the cooking and feasting yet to come!
I found myself wishing earnestly that the peace and joy of the season would remain in everyone’s hearts throughout the coming year.
The entire street glittered under its crystalline coating when I returned to retrieve the mail.
I paused to send another word of thanks — for answered prayers, health, home, hearth, and happiness. In that sparkling winter wonderland, I felt incredibly blessed.
No, no material gifts were awaiting me under the tree this year.
But then again, I couldn’t think of anything else I needed.
I already had everything I could want.
As I headed back inside, I whispered one more wish into the crisp, cold air,
that the true magic of Christmas would infuse every heart and home throughout the coming year.
