Losing Traction
100-word fiction
Bald tires, bald pate. How many bald spots can one man worry about, Stan wonders as he slams the car door resignedly, ignoring the bits of rust that fall to the gravel.
The screen door creaks as he pushes his way in, met by the smell of tuna casserole and a pile of wet flip flops.
“Dad! Mommy says Sandy’s in waaaa-bor! The puppies are coming tonight!” shouts the youngest.
Sticky kisses. Raucous laughter. Spilled milk. A hot breeze from the window box fan.
Retreat or retread?, he muses.
And reaches for another scoop of casserole with a gentle smile.
