Looking Forward to Better Weather-The Garden To Do List-Dan’s Almost Daily Journal

Volume 59-It’s May-Nice Weather Will Finally Arrive This Weekend Here in Central NY

Photo by Glen Carrie on Unsplash

Welcome back. Raise your hand (or better yet clap for my story) if you’re tired of this weather over the last week or 10 days. Rainy and cold. Did I mention rainy? After a relatively dry and warm two-thirds of April, the tide turned and we are in a wet and cold pattern. Through April 21st we had 1.7 inches of rain. At the end of April, we had 6.7 inches!! Needless to say, all gardening and lawn work has come to a halt.

Starting this weekend (May 6th) the weather is supposed to improve greatly and get back to more normal conditions for early May.

In mid-April, I was excited about the weather and was thinking I would be able to get an early start on the garden. At least for cold-tolerant vegetables. I rototilled the garden and got the cold frame set up. The soil was dry enough to work without clumping, etc.

I even planted Chinese Cabbage, Pak Choi, and Kale in the cold frame. Since these are cold-tolerant, they are holding their own. Once the weather turns, they should grow nicely.

What I Will Plant Next in the Garden

Hopefully this weekend, I will add some lettuce plants ( Jericho and Rouge D’Hiver) to the cold frame this weekend. All of the veggies mentioned so far were started using the Winter Sowing technique:

Once again this technique was successful and I would recommend that you try it. Once the seeds are planted and containers placed outside (in the cold), there is absolutely no care required until the seeds germinate when the weather warms.

Next on the planting list will be onions. Once the garden dries out I will plant these. I recently bought some yellow onion sets (Stuttgarter type). Also, I started 2 new varieties from seed this year (Ailsa Craig Exhibition and Bianca Di Maggio Cipollini) that I am looking forward to trying:

Stay tuned for more updates.
