Looking for Inspiration for a New Speech?
Some tips to help you get started
Gavel Club of University of Moratuwa is a student club which I hold close to my heart for many reasons. This article is a short-write up which I provided to their newsletter on the request of Chathumi Thumbovila (who also provided the list of links mentioned). The original newsletter can be found here.
Dear reader,
I wonder what brought you here. Perhaps you stumbled on this while scrolling through the Facebook newsfeed. Perhaps this landed in your e-mail. Whichever way it is, I think we have something in common — an interest in becoming a better version of ourselves.
Public speaking is a very important skill to develop in that process. It is a journey of a lifetime, but we can start right now. The Gaveliers at Gavel Mora have put together some links to help you on that. You will find speeches from World Champions, innovators, activists, artists, actors, and even someone like you or me. Some would make you cry; some would make you laugh out loud; some would make you look at the world with a different mindset — and will hopefully help you craft your own story.
I still remember how I struggled to speak in the round-robin session (a chance to speak for 20 seconds) of the first Gavel meeting I attended. That was in 2014. Currently, I am a 2nd year PhD student at Nanyang Technological University. The skills I learned about public speaking and communication during undergraduate days still help me; be it in conducting a presentation for my qualifying examination or preparing to be a tutor.
If you’re new to public speaking, you may have a lot of questions and nervousness within you. However, there are many supportive people who can help you out. So, feel free to reach out to me, or any Gavelier.

Another good tip for beginners is to grab every opportunity you can lay your hands on — be it to ask a question from a speaker at a lecture, or to take up a simple role at a meeting. The practice you get from speaking in small opportunities will lead to bigger opportunities; serious presentations, interviews or even convincing your crush that you imagine a future with both of you together. Imagine how confident you will feel when you build your practice over time.
I wish you all the very best in your public speaking journey. Now, it’s time to watch a speech.
