This writing is based on first-hand experience, including currently living in the south, growing up there, or even visiting. However, they are also open to perspectives of how people who are not from there see the south.
The website has many different articles you can read to see if you think you can do this type of writing. The guidelines page also has some examples to look at.
Nonfiction: They are looking for in-depth features which run 2,500–5,000 words. They will also consider personal essays, profile pieces, reviews, and opinion pieces. Those stories range from 1,000 to 3,000 words.
