Summary

The "History of Women" publication is seeking creative and engaging story submissions about true historical accounts of women, emphasizing the need for originality beyond typical historical narratives.

Abstract

The "History of Women" publication is actively inviting writers to submit stories that offer a fresh perspective on women's history. The editors are looking for narratives that go beyond well-trodden tales of famous women found on Wikipedia, aiming to captivate readers with interesting and lesser-known accounts. Submissions should be original, conversational in style, and visually appealing, with a preference for stories that are at least four minutes in reading time and accompanied by colorful imagery. The publication adheres to Medium's distribution standards, requiring proper citation of facts and images, and discourages the inclusion of multiple links within the text. Writers are encouraged to review trending stories on the platform for inspiration and to ensure their content aligns with what resonates with the audience. The publication is part of Medium's Boost Beta program, offering the potential for increased visibility for selected stories.

Opinions

  • The editors believe that simply rewriting Wikipedia content or well-known historical accounts is uninteresting and not what their audience desires.
  • They value stories that are engaging and can capture the audience's attention, emphasizing the importance of storytelling over a dry historical essay format.
  • Visual elements, particularly color images, are considered important for attracting reader interest.
  • The publication prioritizes a conversational writing style to make the historical content more relatable and enjoyable.
  • They discourage excessive self-promotion through links, trusting that quality writing will lead readers to explore more work by the authors.
  • The editors are committed to growth and seek to increase the publication's reach through good writing and reading experiences.
  • They see potential in their writers and their stories, as evidenced by their participation in Medium's Boost Beta program.

Seeking Creative Storytellers For History Of Women

What we want…

Here’s what (too many) writers do when they see a publication called History of Women. They think, omg, I know a woman who lived once!

Then they tell the story of Marie Curie, or the first woman to fly a plane, or some story like that. Basically, they re-write the Wikipedia page and try to make it a bit more compelling. Which, sure, that’s history.

But also? It’s kind of boring. If people wanted to read that, they’d load up Wikipedia. Or history.com. Most readers don’t love history essays.

Bring me something interesting! It’s pretty open. Woman or women. True history. The rest is wide open. I look at submissions with one question in mind. Is this interesting?

SUBMISSION GUIDE

Short and simple.

1. Medium’s rules apply…

I don’t need to make rules. Medium already did. You can read them here. Note: Facts should be cited with a link. Images credited with a link.

2.Color images when possible

Stories with black and white cover images don’t get clicked as often. Used full color images when possible. Or, use Canva, etc. to add some color.

3. Don’t add a bunch of links

Not through the post, or at the bottom. It’s off-putting to readers. The point of your story isn’t to promote your other stories. If people love your writing, they’ll check out your profile. A link in the footer is fine. :)

4. Conversational style, please!

We want stories, not history essays. Use conversational style, please.

5. No previously published stories, no short reads

We only accept unpublished drafts. Min read time 4 minutes.

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR FIRST POST

Once you’ve been added as a writer, you can submit stories using the 3 dots at the top of your editing screen. If you have not been added as a writer yet, here’s how to submit your first story.

  1. Write a draft of a post you’d like to submit.
  2. Click the 3 dots and click “Share Draft Link”
  3. Send it to me using the form here

Thanks!
