Summary

Dennett shares a personal and reflective week through the Photo-A-Day Challenge, capturing moments of health struggles, comfort, and recovery, amidst the backdrop of their home and surroundings.

Abstract

The website content is a personal narrative by Dennett, detailing a week of challenges and comforts through a series of daily photos. The narrative begins with a focus on the warmth of their home during a period of illness and limited mobility, and transitions into documenting the early mornings, health scares of their pet Syau, playful musings over a 'crime scene', and the seriousness of undergoing gallbladder surgery. The week concludes with signs of recovery and appreciation for the support received from friends and family, particularly 'Captain Argentina' and Gina. The photos serve as a visual diary, each paired with a one-word descriptor and occasional narrative, reflecting the emotional journey of the week. Dennett also invites others to join the Photo-A-Day Challenge, listing participants and outlining the rules for contribution.

Looking for Comfort

My week in photos

Most of my photos are taken outside, often looking away from our home to the lake. Bad weather early in the day and health issues for me and Syau limited my outdoor time on Sunday. So, I turned around and took a photo from the outside looking in at our warm and inviting home. A nice place to be on a cold day when you aren’t feeling well.

Now that our clocks have backtracked, it’s nearly dark when I leave for work at 5:45. I caught this shot of the moon as I was getting in my car.

Since Syau’s hospitalization for pancreatitis and gastroenteritis in September, she’s had a few flare-ups. Fortunately, she responded quickly to the meds we have on hand. Saturday, she had the worst recurrence since September. Honestly, we didn’t think she’d make it through the night. She survived — again — making us wonder if she has nine lives like a cat.

This fountain is outside the hospital where I had my gallbladder surgery on Thursday. I didn’t toss in a coin and make a wish, but my surgery did go well and I left the hospital that night, but later than I was supposed to because my surgery was delayed almost three hours. Unfortunately, I left so late that I arrived at the pharmacy 6 minutes after they closed, meaning I had no pain medication for the night.

Friday was recuperation day. I did very little. Captain Argentina insisted on taking over my duck-feeding duties in the morning, giving me a chance to take the only photo of the day.

Saturday evening, I took my first regular walk with Syau since my surgery. The moon was already glowing. The sky looked so peaceful.

This week started with Syau being ill and ended with my gallbladder surgery. I was very anxious about my operation. People kept saying It’s a routine surgery, but it wasn’t routine for me. Nothing about my health has been routine this year.

It was a week of illness and discomfort, as well as feeling better and comfort, for both Syau and me. Captain Argentina was a great nurse and my friend Gina was my health care advocate. I leaned heavily on both of them.

As this week comes to an end, Syau is well and I am improving each day. We are warm and comfortable in our home, glad that this challenging week is behind us.

In July 2020, I started the Photo-a-Day Challenge to help combat the virus blues. I take photos every day and choose one (maybe, two) to represent the day. Then, add a one-or-two-word descriptor and maybe, some narrative. A simple way to observe and preserve.
