ASGARALY LOULOUA

Locust Invasion In Madagascar…

On June 06, in our house by the ocean, we were enjoying peace, taking the nap after so long, when something woke me up.

I stood up, thinking, to the ballet of the birds that are currently coming to the bungalow, since it is a nest of greenery, but no, it was thousands of locusts heading to our bungalow, thousands and thousands like clouds !!!

I came out of the bungalow and took my camera to take pictures of them !! Even the sun was obscured by the veil of locusts!!

I was devastated because I knew that the bamboos I had been pampering for so many years would be devoured!!

And indeed, all the young leaves on the top were eaten in the space of a minute and I, also, saw the mango trees, which seemed to have Insect garlands with so many locusts on their stems !!!

A disaster that seemed to worry no one! People were laughting, not realizing that these insects are synonymous of starvation as these grasshoppers eat the newly planted young rice shoots ! Here, those locust are called “valala” in malagasy language ! It is synonymous of drought and hunger for the population !

It’s mind-boggling to see people so careless and making fun of the loss of crops!

These grasshoppers have returned after crossing Antananarivo and they come and go, destroying everything in their path!

My poor bamboos are totally bare, no more young leaves were left and the ground was dotted with their poop and the tips of leaves!!

It seemed that a storm had passed, as it was so fast, and when I went down to see the damage, the ground was littered with broken bamboo stems, the softest stems!!

I could not believe how dangerous and ravenous was those locusts! Children were having fun making the grasshoppers fly away.

I was seeing sadly to my bamboos praying deeply inside me that may this disaster don’t come back again…..
