Living in the Gray

a poem

“Freedom is Slavery War is Peace Ignorance is Strength”

This familiar slogan from a dystopian book was first introduced to us as absurdity, as our teacher asked what we thought these opposites juxtaposed held in meaning.

A younger me saw this as a manipulation of words, as I still do. But younger me took this and perhaps overapplied it to mean that one should be steadfast in their beliefs and definitions so that the truth cannot be diluted, especially with intentions to misguide.

I still disagree with the slogans from this dystopian book, but I’ve since learned to embrace the gray, holding space, having humility for the nuances that create complex situations.

I had to learn this.

Am I Chinese? Or Canadian? Could I be both?

Am I a Hong Konger? Or Chinese? Can I be both, in this now politicized distinction that I wonder if it crosses the boundary of the newest law that frames any discussion of freedom, democracy and all as sedition, with a maximum sentence of life in prison. Think about how strange that feels to someone who doesn’t hold the same feelings or fear for the terms Torontonian vs. Canadian.

And, as I’ve mentioned the colonized names of Turtle Island: Have I been displaced as a result of colonization? Yes. Am I a settler benefitting from stolen lands? Yes.

Each level of complexity holds a yelling voice insisting that there can only be one truth, as I exist as a combination of these people, unsure what my inner voice should be yelling.
