Living In -45°C Temperatures: Dressing To Beat The Freeze

It’s time to stop grumbling and start appreciating the beauty of the cold season.

Winter here in Canada is long and frigid. The temperature can easily drop to a bone-chilling -45°C. Every year, I hear people complaining about the cold. Every winter, they barely brave a step outside their door. They start their cars an hour early to have it extra toasty despite the high gas prices and will still be shivering in their flimsy jackets. Of course, they find the winter unbearable because they don’t dress appropriately!

There is no need to freeze when you can spare the money and buy yourself whatever you need to stay warm. I for one, am well-equipped, unlike most, and don’t shy away from thick winter clothes. I take my time to get dressed and don’t care if I run around looking three times my size. Living out here where the cold can last up to five months, it is about time that people invest in proper winter clothing to be as comfortable as possible.

Thanks to my wardrobe, I am just that.

You see, my snowmobile jacket will not do when it’s -45°C out. I wear at least another two layers underneath. And when it comes to my lower extremities, I put in the same attention. Wearing a pair of warm fleece-lined leggings underneath my snow pants will help my legs from chilling, and sometimes I even wear another pair of sweats on top when it gets extra cold! Now, how about that?! Boots with extra insulation are my go-to, and I wear not just one but two pairs of gloves (I even carry an extra pair inside my pants while out dog sledding to keep them nice and warm should my hands start to freeze). To complete my look, I wear a warm trapper hat topped off with my balaclava to shield my face from the wind. It seems like a lot, but dressing as I do, I can be outside with my furry companions at -45°C for a good few hours without the risk of hypothermia.

While most people opt to hibernate indoors, I spend my time outdoors, snowmobiling or dog sledding through the empty streets of our old little town, enjoying the beauty of the snowy landscape around me. I believe that with proper clothing, people can have a different winter experience. Instead of dreading the cold, they can bundle up and enjoy many winter activities with family and friends, making it a fun and wholesome season.
