Pont De Jardin
An urban upgrade for Paris
Cities across the world are trying to bring back a more pleasant pedestrian experience. Some do that better than others. The great example of Copenhagen has become a role model of sustainable urban development with style. The city shows how you can build efficiently/sustainably and still maintain a high quality in design.

Green space has become an essential part of modern urban development to bring back nature into cities and to create more diverse public programming. You can see the trend with specific examples such as the Highline in NYC or the bicycle bridge “Bicycle Snake” in Copenhagen. Another great example are the park bridges “Skygarden” in Seoul or even the upcoming waterfront development called the Dryline in NYC by Bjarke Ingels Group. However, the need to develop the urban fabric of cities is relevant for all cities, no matter if old or new.
I used to live in Paris for some time and I love Paris. It is arguably the most beautiful city and it has a compact size that I find appealing. And yet the city is not perfect. There is a debate going on that Paris could turn into a bicycle city with reprogrammed streets to make the city greener and more pedestrian friendly. I like that!
What I missed in Paris were newly developed activity zones that I wished existed when I tried to go for a run in the city. I was brainstorming ideas about programming like: a beautiful running track or potential bathing in the Seine. Also, a more developed river life overall. Again, Copenhagen seems to be at the forefront here with exceptional developments like bathing in the harbor water of the city. The city actually offers countless cool concepts for the public to take advantage of that involves immediate water access.

What I thought of and what I am proposing in this article is the Pont De Jardin. An urban development along the Seine for the public with diverse active programming from a bicycle track, an urban park, an urban theatre, sports zone and more…
“A project dedicated to elevate the urban fabric along the Seine with more green space and diverse public programming.”
The project is dedicated to more public green space that will add a missing layer (in my opinion) to ultimately make the city “the most liveable city in the world”. With the Pont De Jardin, it is not necessary to develop a new high rise building or to extend the city outside the ring. It is ultimately upgrading an already existing but underused river life along the Seine.
The Seine Today

The Seine is a central urban feature in Paris. In fact, the Seine is a divider of North and South splitting the city in two main parts physically. In another sense, the Seine can also be interpreted as the connector as it leads through the city from East to West. The beauty of Paris remains unquestioned. It is one of a kind that deserves quality developments in every way.
The beauty of Paris remains unquestioned.
Larger urban developments like the Highline or the Dryline have not been developed along the Seine yet. Besides some smaller programming with outdoor bars or an artificial beach, the urban fabric along the Seine pretty much looks pale and gray and is still underused.
Pont De Jardin

The Pont De Jardin is a large urban development revitalizing the river life along the Seine in Paris. The park bridge extends over a distance of about 6,25 kilometers. The bridge “starts” as a conceptual extension of Rue Balard and “ends” at Saint-Michel. As mentioned previously, the project consists of multiple different green and active programming for the public.
As part of the Pont De Jardin, we have different programming such as ….
- An urban theatre
- Green seating to observe the Eiffel Tower
- Bathing in the Seine
- Park areas
- Sport zones
- …
Check out more specifically what the programming could look like.
Sport Zones

Urban theatre

Any dream can become reality and I do believe the idea of the Pont De Jardin should get the chance as well. It is dependent on a public discourse around the topic of what the city should consist of in the future. It immediately becomes political as the scale of the project impacts the entire city. However, the idea has to provide a useful upgrade to the urban fabric of Paris and to add another urban layer to the already amazing quality of life in the city!
I also believe that this first scheme is a draft concept. The project needs much more in depth analysis how to react to the individual neighborhoods along the Seine and how this can impact the programming on the bridge as well as its style. The scale of the project implicates the possibilities in the detail.
Feel free to comment below as I would love to hear your thoughts. Do you like the urban developments I mentioned as examples in other cities? Do you think Paris is missing that and deserves a more green river lid as an upgrade here?
