Living Amongst The Massacre: It’s Time For Us To Agree On This One Fact
Get hung up on small details like a child, or choose to come together as adults to protect our children. You decide.
There are several issues we can argue regarding the current state of affairs in the United States. Many brilliant people spend a lot of energy fighting over why their solution is better.
This article isn’t a place to bring your political shit-take and finger pointing, whether you fall on the right or left.
This is a place for adults to read, learn, and consider. If you don’t understand what that means, I recommend you to take your shit to Twitter.
Reality Check
I’m sure I’m not the only one that gets tired of hearing “blah, blah isn’t the solution”, or “no! Yadda, yadda isn’t the solution”. So we go around and around sounding like the adults on Charlie Brown.
Let’s all stand together in reality for a moment, shall we?
The truth is, we don’t know if any of those statements are true.
We don’t know what will and won’t work because we haven’t tried anything.
Just like I told my husband when I asked for a divorce,
“It’s not what you did; it is what you didn’t do that brought us to this point.”
Leadership is situational, evolutionary, and an exercise at best. No one has ever claimed leadership to be an exact scientific process. We must try, step back, analyze, adjust, and try again.
And I mean MATERIAL changes. Not legislation that takes decades to play out.
The keyword here is “try.” But sure, let us spend more time talking about hypotheticals and what will and won’t work and choose inaction over being proven wrong.
Let’s do more of this. It’s yielding fantastic results.
Get Over Yourself
The foundation of this debate over the Second Amendment comes down to defining what the word “rights” means.
The simple truth is our rights do not supersede the general public’s safety.
They. Just. Do. Not.
If you don’t like hearing that, go ask your Mother to teach you how to handle the word “No.” I don’t have the time to teach you, I’m raising my own toddlers.
However, that doesn’t mean it is all or nothing. In case no one ever explained this, two things can exist simultaneously.
You can like mustard and mayonnaise.
You can love and hate the copying machine at work.
We can put sensible safety measures in place, and if you aren’t a lunatic, you can still own a gun. Astonishing, I know.
The “All or Nothing” narrative is poison, and has to stop.
Let’s Agree
Regardless which side of the political, socioeconomic, or cultural side you find yourself, there is one fundamental concept upon which we can all agree:
Children should not go to school in the morning to end the day with parents giving blood samples to the FBI because their children’s slaughtered bodies are unrecognizable.
If you cannot agree with that statement, I encourage you to reveal yourself for the inhumane and immoral person you are. Please, feel free to comment and let us all see you justify the slaughter of children.
We will be waiting.
If you can agree with this, then I invite you to the table of solutions. Welcome!
Turn The Volume Down
Unfortunately, there is so much noise that the general public has difficulty driving the narrative. So, what ends up happening is politicians with deeply lined pockets get to do it while we’re busy fighting each other.
They get to decide on action or inaction.
They get to choose money over life.
They get to determine the direction in which this country will move.
We can either be victims of the politicians we elect to represent us, or we can vote our conscious and hold them accountable when they choose to do nothing.
They are NOT infallible creatures, and hardly ever represent the best interest of you and me.
You and I don’t get paid to work and do nothing.
We are required to produce.
Why do we accept this from our elected officials?
Just as anything else, this is a multi-layered, complicated issue. I don’t have all the answers, but for anyone who wants to defend the status quo, I have one question:
Is it working? IS. IT. WORKING?
Something has broken, and we are at a point where if we don’t come together to attempt real solutions, we don’t deserve to be upset when massacres like this occur.
“In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.” -Theodore Roosevelt
