Summary

Vidya Sury recounts a personal experience where intuition saved her from a fatal accident, emphasizing the importance of listening to one's inner voice as a form of spiritual guidance.

Abstract

In a reflective piece responding to Dancing Elephants Press Prompt 13/52, Vidya Sury shares her profound belief in intuition as a manifestation of spirituality. She narrates a harrowing incident from 1984, early in her corporate career, where an unseen force or inner voice deterred her from crossing a road, moments before a lorry fatally struck a man in the same spot. This experience solidified her trust in intuition, which she attributes to many of her life's best decisions. Sury advocates for meditation and quiet self-reflection as tools to hone one's intuitive abilities, suggesting that a calm and peaceful state of mind is conducive to receiving intuitive insights. She encourages readers to recognize and act upon their intuition, as it can have life-saving implications.

Listening to My Intuition — An Amazing Experience in Spirituality

Ever had the following thoughts in your head?

“Something tells me that I should/should not...”

“My gut feeling says that…”

“Somehow I just feel today is not the day…”

“I really think we should postpone this…”

That inexplicable inner voice, a “feeling” is your intuition trying to guide you.

I believe that intuition is a form of spirituality within us. Over the years, I’ve realized that I am strongly intuitive. In fact, many of my life’s best decisions — both on the personal and professional front — have been a result of intuition.

I could give you hundreds of examples (and probably send you into a deep, deep sleep). But let me share just one unforgettable experience from 1984 when I had just started my corporate career.

The voice of my intuition

It was a morning like any other. I got ready to go to work and after bidding my folks goodbye and my grandma calling out to me to come back home early, I left. I took the bus as usual.

I lived about fifteen kilometers from my place of work, which meant I left home quite early. The bus ride took about an hour and a half depending on the traffic. I quite enjoyed that time, happily settled in my corner seat, headphones on, and reading a book.

Once I reached my stop, which was the last one, I had a ten-minute walk to my office. It involved crossing a busy road. The traffic lights were not on until 8 am, which meant I had to be extra careful, since there was no traffic regulation.

On this particular day, I was jauntily walking from the bus stop to my office, feeling especially chipper because I was wearing a new sari and carrying a brand new handbag with a brand new Walkman tucked into it with my favorite cassette in it. I was also carrying a new lunch bag. I was quite pleased with myself and admired my gold paint artwork on the blue lunch bag.

Humming, happy, and feeling quite spiritually high, I was about to cross the road. Just before I stepped off the sidewalk, I felt as if I heard a voice telling me not to cross there. Involuntarily I took a step back, to continue to walk on the sidewalk. I turned to see who had spoken. There was no one. Had I imagined it?

Just a little puzzled, but still feeling good in the fresh morning air, I decided to walk a little farther before crossing the road.

What happened in the next few seconds shook me up considerably. A two-tonner lorry was hurtling down the road. Not an unusual occurrence as it was a highway — this was precisely the kind of thing one had to be careful about while crossing that road. As the truck approached fast, I just had enough time to register another guy, pulling a bicycle, dressed in white, casually crossing the road.

Two seconds — just two seconds later, his remains were strewn all over the road. I cannot even explain my feelings right then. Fear, shock, and sadness mingled with my rapid heartbeat. Can you imagine — parts of that man scattered on the road? His cycle was a totaled wreck that had been thrown farther down the road.

There was another bus stop just there, and I sat down in disbelief at what I had just witnessed. A life, gone in an instant.

It could have been me.

That inner voice had saved my life.

What if I had not listened and chosen to ignore it?

No prizes for guessing — I would not be writing this today.

I’ve been told I am intuitive too. My mom has always teased me about how if it was not for the eleventh hour, I’d never get a lot of things done. But my procrastination over things has always been for a good reason. I have listened to my intuition when it told me to postpone something or ditch it altogether. I can confidently say that so far, it has worked out well for me.

Here, I would like to add that meditation, spending quiet time with ourselves is a wonderful tool for developing our intuition. When we learn to quiet our minds, we stand a better chance of listening to our own intuitive guidance.

When our minds go nonstop, our intuitive thoughts are lost in the din of all that chatter. By sitting in silence, we give our intuitive thoughts a chance to be heard more easily and more often.

Intuition thrives in a relaxed peaceful state of mind. Learning to trust our gut feelings comes with practice. When you have an “aha” moment, that is your intuition.

When you find that a solution to a problem comes to you out of the blue — that is your intuition. Whenever you have the feeling that someone is staring at you without even looking up, that is your intuition too.

Your intuition is information that comes to you without you being aware of how it came to you. It happens every day. Just become aware of it and it will become more and more apparent. Who knows, it might save your life one day, as it did mine.
