How to Best Use Medium Facebook Groups
Now you have a list of groups to join; the next question is what is the best way to use them.
You want to promote your work, but you also need to increase your followers and build a community of fellow writers that are supportive of your efforts to grow not just on Medium but as a writer as well.
Here’s how you do all that and more with these Medium Facebook groups.
1. Learn the lay of the land
That is a fancy way of me saying learn the rules and follow them.
Each Facebook Group has its own set of rules for what, when, and how you can post your articles. Some groups only allow you to post links in a thread. Others allow you to post in the body of the group.
Still, others have special days designated to certain types of articles. For example, Monday might be a poem or Tuesdays is for an older post, etc.
Whatever the rules, follow them. You’re in someone else’s house, so don’t go in throwing your stuff everywhere like you own the joint. You’re a guest. You can be asked to leave if you don’t follow the rules. So just abide by the rules each group has set up, and you’ll be fine.
2. Give as much as you take
Do you have some Medium related questions you need to ask?
Looking for some help with a draft?
Great!
These groups are great for helping you navigate Medium and achieve your writing goals. But it is important to understand that these groups are a community, not just a place for you to get the help you need without giving bak.
So be a good member of the community. Answer questions, help other writers out, assist new Medium members in navigating the system.
Whatever you can do to be useful and helpful to the group you should do. We all win when we all help each other out.
3. Don’t just post and run
Piggybacking off the above tip, outside of being helpful, don’t just drop your link and run. These groups are not only about fostering community but engagement as well.
You want other members to read and clap for the work you have to do the same for them. Once again, these groups are about building community and building each other, not just shameless self-promotion.
4. Promote your publications and profile as well
Most of the Facebook groups allow users to promote their publications and profiles on designated days or threads. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to grow your followers for your pub or your overall followers as these are the people who Medium will promote your work to with they distribute it.
It’s also a great opportunity for your connect with fellow writers and find new publications too publsh your work. This is why it is important to be active in the groups outside of just adding a link to your latest article.
5. Keep old articles alive
Facebook groups are one of the best tools in your arsenal to keep your older articles alive and earning for months to come.
One of the biggest keys to success on Medium that doesn’t get enough attention is making sure your older articles don’t die never to be viewed again after they run their initial course.
There are several things you can do your keep articles alive, I talk about that more here:
However, one of the main tactics to keep old posts alive and kicking is to utilize these Facebook groups.
Some groups only allow you to post older content on certain days, so make sure you understand the groups’ policies before you start promoting your older content.
Final Thoughts
There you have it and exhaustive Medium Facebook groups and best practices. When you’re just starting out these groups are invaluable in their ability to help you grow as a writer on Medium and get your initial engagement numbers up.
You won’t make as much money on fans you get from these groups compared to those you get from Medium’s internal sources, I explain more about this here:
In the beginning, however, that’s the least of your concerns. You want to introduce people to your work, gain followers and have a community of people who can support you through your growth on Medium and Facebook groups do that.
