LinkedIn Has a New Feature for Freelancers in Beta: Service Marketplace

When I graduated college back in 2009, one of the things I was advised to do was make a LinkedIn profile. It’s shifted and transformed over the years, reflecting my years in restaurants, grad school, and now adjunct teaching and trying to create a budding freelance writing career. I’ve prided myself in maintaining a network of connections. But only recently, after seeing this article in Tech Crunch, I learned LinkedIn has a new feature that they are beta testing: a service marketplace.

Curious, I headed over to my LinkedIn page to investigate and set it up.

What is LinkedIn’s Service Marketplace?

According to LinkedIn, the service marketplace where you can create “dedicated landing pages that showcase your services and businesses at no cost, which operate on a request and proposal model. Additionally, potential clients can contact providers for free, regardless of connection degree.”

That sounds a lot like Fiverr and a bit of Upwork. I haven’t had much success with Fiverr yet but I feel like I am making small, measurable gains on Upwork. But this sounds promising. I actively use LinkedIn and keep it regularly updated. It sounds like something I can use.

I just set it up yesterday, and I am still discovering this new feature and how it works. I can tell you this though; I am already excited about it.

LinkedIn: Tapping Into Network Potential

I am still new to the freelance writing game. One of the pieces of advice that I keep popping in research I constantly refer back to is that a freelancer can/should go cold calling for potential clients.

I’m an introvert and tend to shy away with cold calling. Also with the age of covid, networking face to face may be put on the backburner so services and networks like LinkedIn come in handy. What makes LinkedIn’s Service Marketplace even more exciting is that it utilizes your already existing LinkedIn Network. LinkedIn explains, “The services on a provider’s Service Page will display on the feeds of their network as well as their own. They’ll also be discoverable in LinkedIn search by members who are and aren’t 1st-degree connections, depending on public profile visibility settings.” That sounds like it is taking a lot of leg work of cold calling and helping me tap into the potential of an already established professional network.

I’m excited about this new feature LinkedIn has in store. Currently, according to Tech Crunch, it is only a part of a small US beta. But you should be on the lookout for it coming to your local market.
