Lingering Vibes
One woman’s superpower

It was not exactly a super power but it was certainly rare. Since early childhood Francine had the remarkable ability to sense lingering vibrations.
You know, you sit on a park bench and you suddenly feel the lingering vibrations of who ever previously sat on that bench. By putting her inner focus on those vibrations Francine was able pick up a lot of information about the one who had emitted the vibes.
You open a box and you can sense the vibes of the last person who touched the box. You can hold some piece of fruit in your hands and you get a vague sense of the lives lived by all the people in the supply chain who handled the fruit. You know.
Once after a fairly brutal relationship break-up Francine found her ex-boyfriend’s sweater in her apartment and she began taking it to bed with her each night because it still had his vibes on it.
It sounds like a delightful teeny tiny superpower to have, right? But there were some downfalls; minor annoyances really. One problem Francine developed was a strong aversion to used books. She could not read a used book without picking up on the vibes of everyone who had read the book. It was annoying and distracting. So she only bought new books. The only vibes on new books was a tiny bit of warehouse worker, a bit of tree, and the author who had written the words. It makes for a more intense and intimate experience.
This is also why Francine never lent any of her books to friends. She didn’t want their vibes to be all over her books. Her friends thought she was a bit of a snob. They just didn’t understand.
Her vibes reading ability played a part in a different relationship break-up as well. This time she was engaged to marry a seemingly righteous, dignified, wealthy, and hot young man. They were already living together when one day he came home and they hugged and kissed.
Francine could immediately feel the vibrations of another person intermingled with his. She sensed that it was female.
“Who is she?”
“Wha… wha… what? I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“She’s a redhead, isn’t she?”
With that, his eyes glazed over. His mouth was half open. He began oozing guilt vibrations all over the place. He was like a deer caught in headlights. The engagement was over.
It is nice to have a superpower, or so it is said. But Francine wondered if she would ever get married. After decades of feeling herself through numerous relationships she was never able to find just the right vibe.
But then one day she took a walk in the park. Francine loved going for walks in nature. In nature she was not bombarded by lingering human vibes. Instead, she became immersed in the vibes of nature. It was a relief to her inner senses. It brought her peace.
Ahead of her on the path was a man playing ball with his dog. As she walked closer the errant ball suddenly began rolling toward her as the dog chased the ball. She put out her foot and stopped the ball much like she once did back on the soccer field when she was still in junior high school.
She stooped down to pick up the ball just as the doggie reached the ball. Francine got down on one knee and rubbed and kissed the delightful Irish Setter. The dog had really good vibes. As the man approached she instantly knew that the dog got a lot of hugging and kissing from that man.
Standing, she handed the ball to the man. For that ever so brief second where they both had their hands on the ball Francine got a full vibes read on the man. She instantly knew that this man was the one.
He had the vibe. He had the mojo. And she could even feel it through the dog. There was no mistaking it. Before a word was spoken a life-long relationship was born.
They were married eleven days later. (Francine threw the sweater away.)
