Linear Thinking Is No Longer the Dominant Force in This World
The Switch Flipped
In a world brimming with information, the old ways of linear thinking — step by step, cause to effect — seem to be taking the backseat. The straightforward path isn’t the only path anymore.
We grew up in a system that advocated linear thinking. A leads to B, which then leads to C — a straightforward path. But as we wade through the complexities of today’s world, it’s becoming clear that this linear model is giving way to more holistic, interconnected ways of thinking…
It’s been about speed, efficiency, and a clear path forward. But things are changing.
Look at how we solve problems today. We no longer just follow a straight line; we explore, we connect dots from different realms, and we create.
Take the realm of technology, for example.
The explosion of AI isn’t just a result of linear progression, but a mesh of many different angles and viewpoints that need to be combined into a larger “viewpoint”, while we can’t really understand anymore what is going on inside such an AI model.
It’s no longer about finding the quickest route to a solution. It’s about understanding the problem from all angles, seeing how it connects to other issues, and then finding a solution that benefits not just one aspect, but many.
And it’s not just in tech. Our social dialogues are changing too. We’re beginning to see the value in understanding the whole picture, the system, not just the individual pieces.
The conversations around climate change, social equity, they all are urging us to think beyond the straight line.
It’s no longer about just absorbing facts, but about understanding contexts, and making connections.
I believe it’s also about combining a logical yet practical approach. You need certain knowledge to “execute” what you want to do, but you also need practical skills and interests.
Knowing many things or being an expert in a certain field without practical skills isn’t enough anymore.
AI models can provide the compressed information you need. But taking action with your unique viewpoint, level of consciousness, and experiences is something that can’t be “outsourced” or “automated.”
This is why we all need to move beyond our linear thinking and step into a more vast or expanded state of mind, where we see our view of the world not as a means to “predict” the future from the failures of the past, but to connect the dots, “calculate” what we don’t yet know, while questioning the norm and staying hopeful, joyful, and peaceful in this process.
We are going to experience heightened states of awareness more often.
In the beginning, it’s difficult to channel these states and stay in them, but as you get more attuned to them, you also can inspire non-linear growth in yourself and the collective.
If we could predict everything, calculate everything, know everything, wouldn’t such a world be without magic and just…sad?
Not only is there more, but viewing the world with a more open mind can activate the magic you felt as a child, the newness of every moment again.
So let’s do that.
Let’s become more free from our conditioning, while also questioning the norm so we see new solutions to old problems, without being stuck in a loop.
