Summary

A man, often referred to as "Lincoln" due to his perseverance and numerous election losses, is in critical condition after being promised and then denied a ministerial position, leading his friends to appeal for any government appointment to save his life.

Abstract

The article discusses the plight of a Nigerian man nicknamed "Lincoln" for his persistent efforts and repeated electoral defeats, reminiscent of Abraham Lincoln's early political career. Despite losing every election from his school days to his attempts at various political offices, he remains optimistic, drawing inspiration from the American president's tenacity. His spirits recently lifted with the new President's inauguration, and he began frequenting Abuja, though without an official position. His hope was shattered when his name was omitted from the leaked ministerial list, leading to his collapse and hospitalization. His friends, aware of the false promise of a ministerial position made by someone claiming to be connected to the President, are now desperate to secure any appointment for him to prevent his demise.

Opinions

  • The author views the subject, "Lincoln," as an embodiment of resilience and unwavering determination despite repeated failures.
  • There is a sense of injustice and betrayal in how "Lincoln" was promised a ministerial position but was then conned out of a significant amount of money without any receipt or proof of the transaction.
  • The friends' appeal to the President suggests a belief that those in power have the capacity to rectify wrongs and should intervene in such situations.
  • The request for an appointment, even a seemingly insignificant one like SSA(House Cleaning), indicates the friends' desperation to save "Lincoln's" life and their perception that any role within the government could restore his will to live.
  • The tone of the article implies a criticism of the political system where individuals can be exploited by those claiming proximity to power, with no accountability or recourse for such deception.

LINCOLN MUST NOT DIE.

Our man could be described as a born loser .Or a veteran loser,if you like. But he never see himself as such. He believes he is the Nigerian version of the great American president, Abraham Lincoln,a tenacious, dogged and unwavering fighter. And Abraham Lincoln is what we all call him. Now,this sobriquet has virtually replaced his real name, more or less. Our own Lincoln started to lose elections very early in life.Right from his secondary school days .He contested for the position of the school's Senior Prefect in his final year and lost.Later,he contested as the Student Union President at both the College of Education and the University he attended but was defeated woefully on both occasions. Shortly after graduation,he contested for the position of a Councilor and lost again. In quick succession,he aspired to both the House of Assembly and the House of Representatives positions but suffered defeat. Later, he tried a Senatorial seat but was seriously walloped. In all these setbacks however,he was unperturbed, but always in high spirits. He took things in their stride, assuring us again and again that, like his hero, Lincoln,he was almost getting there. One thing we noticed about him in recent time is that he is highly elated .Specifically since the inauguration of the new President. He goes about bubbling with life and enthusiasm. He also frequents Abuja. We know he is a member of the ruling party but we also know that he is not occupying any position of consequence in the party. But the cat was finally let out of the bag last week when the ministerial list was leaked by some mischief peddlers and our friend's name was conspicuously absent. Lincoln collapsed immediately and had to be rushed to the hospital where doctors are still battling to save his life. Somebody who claimed to be a friend of the President's friend had promised our friend a ministerial position after taking a fortune from him .He successfully conned Lincoln. When we got the details,we travelled to Abuja to confront and demand a refund from the trickster but he demanded the receipt with which he collected any money from Lincoln. Can you see the cheek?.Who has ever issued any receipt for bribe in this country?.Or anywhere in the world?. Our major concern now is how to save Lincoln's life .Could anyone in the corridor or bedroom of power kindly prevail on the President to give our man an appointment, any appointment?. A position like Senior Special Assistant, House Cleaning,SSA(House Cleaning), would even be okay for him as things are. Lincoln must not die.
