Like Water For Garden

A Writing Haiku

food, sun, water +time for writing like gardening mystery and luck

Thank you, Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 (she/her/她), for the prompt: describe “writing” using an unconventional analogy. To liken writing with gardening is perhaps not hugely unconventional; nonetheless, it what came to mind as I reflected on the prompt.

Like gardeners who dig a hole, drop in a seed, and water it, writers have an analogous process. A writer usually starts with a known “seed of an idea” — a fantasy seed, mystery seed, non-fiction, or whatever. But like a gardener watches as the plant grows to find out how many branches it’s going to have, how tall it’s going to be etc., Much in a similar vein, a writer, usually finds out as the story grows to see what the final product is going to look like, while “watering” all the various “seeds” in their writing garden.

Thank you for reading!
