Light the Beam!

Poetry | In response to Dancing Elephants prompt 30 of 52

Running through my slice of Paradise I found myself immersed and tucked away in nature’s green armpits. I made a quick stop to admire the soft path that snakes down to the river that rushes, spills, and gushes down full of stories that hydrated the dry face of Sacramento scorched from previous droughts, until our heavy winter rains opened up California’s dry pores.

Whenever I stop to take pictures of nature’s lush dimples dotting the trail, I listen to Heaven’s Choir, I see my father’s smile spread across in colorful lupines and golden poppies, but unlike today, I typically don’t see a beam of light filter through the tree crowns With the sun’s splayed rays letting Sacramento’s Kings basketball fans know that it’s time to light that purple beam full of pride and self-esteem.

Thank you for the great prompt Dr. Preeti Singh.

I really enjoyed Lubna Yusuf’s monoku nature poems.

Love is Enough. Monoku Poems | Nature- In response to… | by Lubna Yusuf | Dancing Elephants Press | Apr, 2023 | Medium

I almost did not watch tonight’s much-anticipated basketball game, but after chatting with my good runner friend, I was so glad that I did. The Sacramento Kings defeated the Golden State Warriors to tie the playoff series 3–3. They played amazing and I remembered that beam of light that I saw during my morning run — a good omen for tonight’s victory.

After each win, the purple beam is lit up on top of the Golden 1 Center building, which is quite a spectacle. Moreover, some Sacramento Kings fans created their own purple beams to decorate their rooftops and show their joy and pride after each team’s win.

Thanks so much for reading my poem.
