Life Is Like a Chocolate Cake
A rap series about life (1 of 3)

Life is like a face with its smiles and its frowns,
Life is like an elevator with its ups and its downs,
Life is like a chocolate cake, beauty-full of pounds,
Life is like a circus; there is always gonna be a clown,
What I’m tryna say is embrace that smile on your face,
Embrace those moments when you elevate, levitate,
And that chocolate cake, just embrace the taste,
Half empty-half full; it is all up to you,
I swear you get to choose the way you live your day, and,
I remember it like it was yesterday, man,
Dad saying that…
But damn, am I grateful for every day that I have,
Grateful for every morning that I help him with his top,
Grateful for every night that I pour him another shot,
Grateful for every time we get to cook dinner together,
And we get the giggles; it’s always the little things forever, ever,
Wasting time, going over and over stuff in bed,
Take a breath, clear your head, think of happy thoughts instead,
Fill yourself with positive vibes; what’s that line?
“Always look on the bright side of life”,
I see my dad struggling on a daily basis,
Life like a walk in the desert with the absence of an oasis,
And the things we take for granted, for him, they’re slipping away,
But he always finds the light, and he never complains,
So, I embrace all the good times, the memories that I love,
Pouring cornflour in a cup, and just hundy cracking up,
All them tickle fights that we always used to have,
And just laughing so hard, falling right off the bed,
And I remember back when you could still play the guitar,
We’d sing “always on my mind” and “here is my heart”,
Having arm wrestles and playing hand games and card games,
It’s hard saying it past tense; why do things have to change?
And I’ve learned to be patient,
Slow down, I know now, that life it ain’t a race and,
Even if it was, it ain’t one you wanna win,
The tortoise taught us to be slow and steady, and that’s just how I’ve been,
’Cause if life is a race, then ain’t the finish line death?
But it ain’t the destination; it’s the journey that matters in the end,
You could sprint your way through life, but I wouldn’t recommend it,
When you could sit back, and kick back, enjoy the ride instead,
We spend our whole childhood wishing we were big,
We get older, and then we want to relive being a kid,
That’s why I say, be grateful, embrace all you have,
’Cause, it could all be gone, before you know it you’ll be looking back, like man,
Life is short; live it up, and be grateful,
You’re blessed with life; why the heck would you be wasteful?

I wrote and performed this rap in highschool for my speech in English class. I was a bit cheeky and also submitted it as my creative writing piece in English and my solo composition in Music. I received top marks all around and was even awarded the creative writing cup for it!
My dad was suffering from Motor Neuron Disease at the time and has sadly since died.
