Life outside Pyjamas

Why you should still get dressed in lockdown

The world has temporarily shut down and we’ve all been ordered to stay indoors. Slight changes have been put in place here and there, but nobody really knows what’s going on in the UK right now. There’s talks about lifting lockdown, with no signs of the number of Covid19 cases coming to a halt.

I have been stuck in the same space for nearly 2 months, with the odd shopping trip for the essentials once a week. I will most definitely be choosing to actively stay indoors if lockdown does lift earlier than necessary, in a bid to keep my family safe, but I guess that’s a story for a different day.

The trouble with being in confinement for so long is that all the days seem to be rolling into one. People are going days without seeing anyone except for those within the same household. It’s easy to see why the trend setting clothing item is a pair of comfy PJ’s.

There are some pro’s to wearing Pyjamas right now. They are the ultimate symbol of relaxation. If you have one to many things to tackle in one day, its one less thing to worry about, you can just roll out of bed and you’re ready to take on the day.

Where there are pro’s however, there are usually cons and on this matter, the cons out way the pros by quite a margin. The problem with relaxing wear is that our brain is fully aware that these clothes are associated with sleep and so productivity goes down the drain. If you’re planning on getting work done, chances are, you’ll be too lethargic to do much.

Of course, we should not be ruling out comfy clothes altogether. One of the luxuries of working from home is the fact that you can wear whatever you want. Getting dressed for work, doesn't necessarily mean you have to stick to your usual workplace dress code. As long as we are still getting dressed for our day ahead, then we are self caring by helping our sleep, productivity and mental health.

There’s no denying that this is a difficult time for everyone. Take the time to recuperate if it’s needed. Have those lazy days in your pyjamas, if that is what you need, but when you’ve recovered, getting dressed will do you more good than you can imagine.
