Life is Simple

Photo by Paul Gilmore on Unsplash

I live a pretty simplistic lifestyle.

The other day, one of my friends were asking me the same questions I get all the time. “How do you live such a simple life? How do you ignore the distractions?”

“What distractions?” I asked.

He said, “Well, I don’t know. Binge-watching a show on Netflix, for example. How come you don’t find that tempting?”

“Because I value my time. I have a clear purpose, and I would feel like I’m wasting my time if I do that.”

Don’t get me wrong. When I say “I value my time,” I‘m not being condescending. I’m saying that with the most humble intentions.

And of course, I wasn’t like this before. I would sit on the couch and finish a season of Game of Thrones in a day. A season… If an average episode is 40 minutes, that is at least 6 hours of watching TV.

If you don’t have a purpose, you don’t have priorities. If you don’t have priorities, you get distracted. And life gets complicated.

Let me give you a very simple example. Let’s say you didn’t check your phone for a long time. There are 10 different messages from different people, 5 emails, 20 Facebook notifications and 3 missed calls from your mom or partner.

Would you go ahead and read those emails, messages and notifications. Probably not. You would ignore those and call that person you care about directly to make sure everything is okay.

Another example. If you are hungry and cold, would you care about the new season of Stranger Things?

No.

You would try to find food and shelter first.

So, you need to be that hungry for your purpose to be able to dodge any distractions.

It’s that simple. It’s all about priorities.

And let me tell you straight, even if you don’t have a clear purpose right now, watching TV shows is not going to help you find it.

You need to try different things.

Taste different things.

Take action.

Go do something about it today. You’ve been warned.
