PERSONAL GROWTH STRATEGIES & STORIES
Life Is Not A Tom Cruise Movie — Nor Is It An Episode Of Doctor Who
What is this life, if full of care? We have no time to stand and stare
Can you remember any Tom Cruise movie where he doesn’t run? Maybe in Tropic Thunder. Similarly, during David Tennant’s era as the Doctor, he used to run in all the episodes.
I don’t mind if the greatest action star on earth or an alien timelord runs all the time. But that’s not what we should do.
We can’t help it! There’s so much to do! So, like the Doctor, we choose to run. It’s mostly ok, but it’s important to take a breather sometimes.
In this busy world, we are almost always running. If we are not running, then we are on our phones. We can see there that others are running and posting on social media.
Give yourself permission to do absolutely nothing
I was doing a Yoga session by following a YouTube video. The instructor, Adriene, was doing Yoga and narrating. In the cool-down stage, she asked us to lie down, relax and do nothing. She explicitly asked that we give ourselves permission to do absolutely nothing.
At that moment, I felt truly grounded. My mind always feels like it’s flying from one destination to another. That moment suddenly brought the calm it needed.
But is it realistic? Is it even good for us?
It’s not realistic to just stop and do nothing all the time. It is not even recommended. My point is — life is not about going into any of the extremes. It’s not about all work and no play. It’s also not about relaxing and partying all the time. Life is about balance.
Also, our time is limited on earth. In all of my other articles, I talk about productivity and using time like it’s the rarest piece of gem. Today’s suggestion is not a u-turn on that. I am not asking to throw away everything and sit in a corner all day.
I am just asking to take a break.
Luckily, we don’t need a break for long due to our sleep cycles. As humans, we recharge ourselves through sleep. But while we are awake, our brain keeps on processing all sorts of stuff. Continuously making the brain work might make it dull. It might even make it miss the big picture, think outside the box and find creative solutions to problems.
That break is for our brain. I recommend that we schedule 1 hour per week to do nothing.
How can we do that?
- Maybe draw a bath. Don't take a book with you. Don't take your cellphone with you. It should be just you.
- Maye take an hour long massage. Once again, no phones.
In both the situations, don't think about past or future. Don't let your mind wander. Just focus on the moment.
Don’t get addicted to it!
As I mentioned, it’s a different sensation if you can ground yourself in present. It’s about letting go of the fast pace of life. This feeling can become addictive. That’s not the purpose. The purpose is to give our mind and soul time to collect themselves. So that they can help us become better versions of ourselves and enjoy our lives better.
Here’s to doing nothing!
