Life in Blue and White

The shades of Cyprus

The colours and sights of this picturesque gem, the island of Cyprus, never cease to thrill me. Having grown up on the island of Ireland, the need to be close to the sea runs deep in my veins; my happiest days were spent at the shore.

I will now take you on a short journey around the island through a blue-and-white lens.

Kourion

The sea view from my window allows me to observe the changing colours of the water. At times, the depth of the shade of Mediterranean blue demands a photo session at the beach — I grab my camera, jump into the car and off I go.

The photo below was taken in November last year, well out of the tourist season. I was surprised to see locals bathing in the cool waters!

Paphos

For 10 months at least in the year, we have clear, blue skies. Nothing is more glorious than having a cloudless canvas above after years of gloomy Irish weather.

The iconic white landmark pictured below, Paphos lighthouse, stands out in stark contrast to the unfiltered backdrop of the azure sky. Thankfully, the day I captured that photo was fairly still — the wind can be a problem for photo shoots involving flowers (or weeds!)

The photo in Paphos was taken early before most shops were open for business. Frozen yoghurt or ice cream are not breakfast options. Blue and white are popular colours for tables and chairs/covers in Cypriot cafés and taverns.

Protaras

Several small Cypriot churches are painted in the traditional Greek style of blue and white. Also the colours of the Greek flag, it is a further affirmation of the close relations between the two countries.

Limassol Coast

The stunning white rock formation on the Limassol coast at Agios Georgios Alamanou creates a unique photo opportunity in all kinds of weather. The cloudy sky in winter, with a rougher sea than normal, is depicted below. The white rock on the seabed causes the sea to appear in shades of turquoise.

Fasoula

The first signs of spring in Cyprus this year were heralded through the appearance of almond blossoms as early as the 1st of February. Winter has been mild and nature is awaking early. Should we be worried?

Larnaca

While photographing the window with blue shutters in Larnaca, I realised afterwards I had captured my image in the glass. A selfie of sorts!

Latchi Harbour

Latchi is situated on the north coast of Cyprus and is a popular retreat for Cypriots who want to escape city life.

While walking around the peaceful harbour during my last visit, I spotted the boat I would love to spend a day on. Maybe one day. Dream on!

Lefkara

Painted shutters displaying blues and whites are common throughout the island. High temperatures in the summer and bright sunlight for over 300 days a year require protection to keep out heat and light.

These partially opened shutters represent the glimpse of Cyprus depicted in my ‘blue and white’ selection of photos. I hope you enjoyed the journey!

While based in Cyprus, I have travelled to nearby countries.
