Setting Goals And Tracking Progress Motivates You
You’re in a car, driving down a long, winding road. You have no map, no GPS, and no idea where you’re going. How would you feel? Lost? Frustrated?
Now imagine the same journey, but this time, you have a destination in mind, a map in your hand, and a way to track your progress. Suddenly, the journey feels different. It’s no longer a random drive; it’s a purposeful journey towards a specific destination.
That’s the power of setting goals and tracking progress. It gives your journey — whether it’s in your personal life, your career, or your fitness journey — a sense of direction, purpose and accomplishment.
In the journey of life, having clear goals is like having a roadmap —just like I have already stated above, it provides direction, purpose, and a sense of achievement. But setting goals is just the first step; to truly harness their power, you need to track your progress along the way.
Whether you’re striving for personal growth, career advancement, or health and fitness goals, monitoring your progress not only keeps you accountable but also fuels your motivation to keep pushing forward.
Setting goals gives you something to strive for, a target to aim at, and a sense of purpose to guide your actions. Be it running a marathon, landing your dream job, or learning a new skill, having clear, well-defined goals provides a roadmap for success.
I have shared a lot in the past about how I was able to save up, quit my job and relocate to Europe. You can read about it here. It took me almost three years of goal setting and meticulous tracking of progress especially financially to achieve that goal.
Most people set goals. They write down what they want to achieve in a year, in five years, or in ten years. But how many people actually track their progress towards those goals? Not many. And that’s where the magic happens.
By monitoring your advancement towards your goals, you gain valuable insights into what’s working, what’s not, and what adjustments you need to make along the way. It’s like having a GPS for your goals, guiding you towards success with every step you take.
Tracking progress is like the breadcrumbs in the story of Hansel and Gretel. It shows you where you’ve been, how far you’ve come, and how far you still have to go. It gives you a sense of accomplishment, a feeling of moving forward. And that’s incredibly motivating.
Tracking your progress also provides a sense of accomplishment and motivation to keep going. Each milestone you reach, no matter how small, serves as a reminder of how far you’ve come and how much closer you are to achieving your ultimate goal. It’s like collecting badges of honour along the way, each one fueling your motivation to keep pushing forward.
Tracking shouldn’t be a chore. Personally, I don't use spreadsheets, but I try to incorporate some fun into the process! I create a vision board plastered with inspiring images. I keep a quirky journal filled with your “aha” moments, or even design a wacky progress bar that fills up with every milestone achieved. I make it personal, I make it fun, and this makes my motivation soar.

Moreover, monitoring your progress helps you stay accountable to yourself and others. When you have a clear record of your achievements (and setbacks), you’re more likely to stay committed to your goals and less likely to veer off course. It’s like having a built-in support system cheering you on every step of the way.
Whether you’re striving for personal growth, career advancement, or health and fitness goals, setting goals and tracking progress are essential for success. So take the time to define your objectives, create a plan of action, and monitor your progress along the way. With dedication, perseverance, and a little bit of tracking, you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve.
