Life And Death Are In The Power Of The Tongue

Choose your words carefully.

“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”

Our well-meaning parents tried to comfort us with the sticks and stones mantra that was complete rubbish. Of course, those playground taunts hurt. They were ugly words that crippled our confidence.

We’ve all been on the other end of unkind words. Those words that stick with you like an annoying splinter.

We’ve also experienced the benefits of kind, encouraging words. Words that lifted spirits and renewed hope.

So, we know what words can do.

Proverbs 15:1(ESV) A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

The ones we love the most are the ones we batter with our words. We know the buttons to push to incite the reaction we’re looking for. But we need to remember that stinging words that beat down the spirit are never forgotten by the receiver.

We always have a choice. We can use our words to bring people together, lift people up, and make them feel good. Or we can use our words to destroy and divide.

There are times when we may speak out of anger and regret the words we utter. We all make mistakes. If we have the opportunity to correct such a situation, we need to take it.

Words are the most powerful natural ability we have especially in today’s world where so many have access to the words of others. We have a responsibility to use that power to enhance the world not destroy it.
