Life Advice That Will Change Your Life (As It Did Mine)

How to sharpen your brain activity to build your dream life

Many coaches tell you to change your mindset. But it seems distant and a bit vague, don't you think? How can you actually do that?

What if there was a better way to say that, but with a simple meaning that you can start implementing right now?

Defining Mindset

In Portuguese, there’s no translation for mindset. So here, in Brazil, we commonly use it that exact way as in English: mindset.

Cambridge Dictionary defines mindset as “a person’s way of thinking and their opinion”. That’s a fine definition.

The author of the book I’m currently reading (Becoming Superhuman) says that:

“When any neurological tissue in the brain or the body is activated, it creates mind. Consequently, from a neuroscientific understanding, mind is the brain in action.” — Dr. Joe Dispenza

After thinking a lot about the concept of mindset, I think it’s easier to think of mindset as a “mental box”.

Mental Boxes

Dr Dispenza says that we have different minds for determined actions. For example, when you are cooking, you have a network of neurons that have fired and wired together so many times that they have created a pattern. That pattern is your cooking mindset (or your cooking mental box).

The same goes for the way you drive, work, brush your teeth, talk to people, and so on.

Each activity calls for a different mental box that will automatically engage when you start that activity.

That may be a good thing for simple tasks in terms of practicality, but not so good when it comes to triggers and traumas. You also have a mental box for those situations, that will open out of the blue in those moments.

For a balanced mental state, you can’t let those stiff boxes dominate.

Think Outside the Box (pun intended!)

When you notice you're getting into a dangerous box, stop immediately.

Instead of surrendering to the dangerous box, fill it with good things by changing the perspective of the situation.

Let's say you have to speak in front of a lot of people. Your stagefright box is dying to crack open but don't let it open by itself! First, think of ways to create new neural connections, instead of going back to the old ones.

You can think that you’re being valued, that people want to hear you, that you know what you’re talking about, and that you’re simply going to chat with a few people at the same time. Not a big deal now, right?

And only then allow that box to open. But spoiler alert: it won’t be the same box anymore. It’s a new box, a better one (and that one you can allow to open by itself because it’s not a dangerous box, but a good one).

The Final Meaning

The best way to define that transformation, for me, is to think of improving the mental boxes.

When you focus on improving your mental boxes, things will change. You will feel better and you’ll change your life.

This meaning is simpler than “change your mindset”, but more practical and effective, at the same time. It’s easy to picture the boxes, their opening, filling them, and everything.

What do you think? Do the mental boxes simplify things?
