Lies: What Does It Profit to Lie? Part 2

She was finally in control of her life. Or so she thought!

With the confused, but frightening look etched on his face, Monica felt as if her breath was hit fiercely from out of her body as a feeling of helplessness consumed her. It was a feeling she didn’t want to repeat because it took control of her life away from her.

‘I can’t lose control with three children relying on me. Three innocent children who didn’t ask to be here.’ Her instincts alert.

Staring at her husband, who was relaxed on the sofa as if he had a million dollars in the bank, so he didn’t have to worry about the bills. Life insecurities increased her anxiety, giving her a feeling of helplessness. For years that feeling was never far away. Many things leave us no matter what many of us face in life. The pain always stays. Something surged through her, and she saw the future.

Over the next few weeks, Justin was home every day.

“This is your mother’s house, but we still have to pay for the heat and electricity,” she said, staring at him sitting on the sofa watching Law and Order. “The children must eat. Insurance for both cars is due soon too. The bank demands a minimum of one hundred dollars to keep our account active.”

“Use the credit card,” he suggested.

“And what will we use to pay them?”

Justin turned off the TV, mumbled under his breath, and hurried out the door. As he shut the door a voice inside her said, ‘become your mother or become yourself.’

Her mother depended on her father and never worked. After he left, hell replaced him, forcing her and her sibling to start life too early. Pain and fear of what she and her sibling endured starting life too early, sending pain through her body. Tears flooded her eyes. Blinking, she saw her children doing what she and her sibling did to survive.

Grabbing a deep breath, she found strength from the pain her mother’s cruelty left behind that refused to leave. Now it was time for her to take control of the wheel of her life and stop depending on a man to provide for her. She called Lily, a friend who was a Home Health Aide. Six weeks later she got her certificate and was employed as a Home Health Aide.

The next few months were living from hand to mouth. Coming from poverty, Monica ‘turned her hand to make fashion,’ and became creative and cooked everything her children ate. She clipped coupons and bought everything on sale plus buy one get one free. She plants veggies and herbs during the warm months too.

Her income and economic thinking saved her family from starvation and homelessness while waiting for Justin’s business to start earning an income.

Her home health aide job on the weekend took her away from her children.

Running a household on a small income, and raising a husband who wasn’t mature enough to do the right things for his family. There was no time for Monica. It didn’t matter, she finally was in control of her life.

Or so she taught!
