Letter to my Male Cat

Dear Love Bug:

Xander, you are a sweet boy. I love your little nose licks and the way you run to meet me when I come home from being out all day.

I wanted to talk to you today about something I’ve noticed: you have been treating Anya like a second-class kitty. She is not. I’ve talked with Anya about this. She is going to work on her assertiveness.

Anya deserves an equal seat on the cat tree. This didn’t seem to be an issue with the old cat tree.

The cardboard boxes taped together and covered with carpet scraps worked for a few years, but it was intended to be temporary. I thought you both deserved a sturdy, top of the line cat tree in our new house.

I spent days pouring over various designs and specifications. The tree I finally chose has that large platform on the second level from the top. I thought that level would be comfortable for you. Based on Anya often hanging out inside the cubes of the old tree, I assumed she would enjoy the tunnel or the box on the third level.

Imagine my surprise when you moved into the box and then chased Anya off the tree! Why do you care if she sits in the tunnel or on the large platform?

While I am on the topic of your bullying of Anya, please leave her food bowl in the spare room alone. She should be able to eat out of her bowl in peace while you focus on the bowl in the kitchen. Going from bowl to bowl so that she gives up until you take a nap, is seriously rude.

Part of this is my fault. We should have talked before now about gender equality. You are a cat and probably haven’t given much thought to equal access to resources and opportunity regardless of gender but it is a very important concept I would like you to not only explore but accept as the rule of law in this household.

Anya spends a lot of time on my laptop keyboard. Ask her to pull up this website and read the article on Wikipedia together:

Love,

Warm Lap
