Dear Writer

Letter to Me

From Me, Myself and I

Dear Nancy Jane or Thomas Oscar,

You will arrive as a big surprise! 9 lbs 8 ounces. Don’t worry Mom will be fine. She won’t even believe that you are you- her girl at long last. You are pregnancy number 12. Sadly, some of your sibs never left this place — but oh the places you will go!

You are in for a long loopy train ride with double backs, slow hauls up steep inclines and sudden drops that feel like free falls. You see almost all 50 states and 4 continents.

First stop, Virginia. The iron-rich red clay will seep into your blood, may even be part of your DNA to start. From your Mom’s side of the family tree, you are FFV, the first family of the sovereign colony of Virginia. The gentle hills will shape your soul and no other landscape will suffice for your eyes.

Next stop, Costa Rica. You’ve barely learned the language of home when everything becomes a new sound. You pick up this new language quickly. Mom and Dad do not — you can’t even talk to them. I’m afraid that does not change. You love them with all your being-but you never are able to talk to them about what matters most. You build an unbreakable bond with your five brothers-yes there is one more brother to come! They will always speak “Carolyn.”

Oh by the way- Dad takes one look at you and says “That’s no Nancy Jane.” If you’d been a boy, Thomas was the choice as your grandfather had just died. Somehow Mom and Dad knew you’d be their one-and-only girl. They used up both grandmother’s names on you. ‘Carolyn’ from your Dad’s mom and ‘Frances’ from your Mom’s mom. You carry their names with pride-so sorry Frances will be hard for you to spell.

There will be political upheaval in Costa Rica. Your family is whisked out of the country and you go back to Virginia. There is a life-altering 6 weeks in Ohio, trips to Missouri, a trip through the finger lakes of NY that also shapes your life and a long-traumatic ride to Mississippi. Then, you guessed it back to Virginia.

You live in many different places, but each time you go back to Virginia. You live in Wyoming, Indiana, Switzerland, Massachusetts (don’t live in a state you can not spell!)

Oh, by the way. That post-Mississippi‘ back to Virginia,’ phase you learn why you can’t spell. Then there was Ohio twice, New Mexico, Pennsylvania and New York.

Oh, you noticed Switzerland, tucked in there. You will finally feel at home there. It is your DNA, your father’s family came from a place that was once France, once Germany, and once Switzerland. Our ancestors were Palatines- protestant. Interestingly, you end up living 20 miles from the homestead of your first American ancestor, brought to the ‘Colonies’ by the Mohawk Tribe that lived in what is now called Herkimer, NY.

So, little love, you find home and yourself, but it will take at least 65 years. Try to count the joys, see the majesty, and feel it all.

Oh, the stories you will have to tell!

Love from,

Me, myself and I

Read more about that spelling problem!
