Let’s Go Exercising With The Cars

I’m not a jock, but I exercise almost every day. I mix it up. Some days I walk, some days I ride on my Peloton cycle, and other days I run. The one thing that stays consistent throughout all my workouts is music — I almost always have some playing while I’m exercising.
I’ve created a dozen or so music playlists that I listen to while working out. I’m very happy with my newest list, which is focused on the music of The Cars, one of my favorite bands ever.
My “Let’s Go Exercising With The Cars” Spotify playlist is at the end of this article. If you exercise to it, I hope you enjoy it. However, if you just lay around and do nothing while listening to it, I hope you enjoy it under those circumstances too. Whatever. Life is short. Do what you want and enjoy yourself.
Before sharing the entire list, I want to spotlight some of the songs on it and tell you why I enjoy working out while listening to them.
I started my playlist with “Since You’re Gone,” which is from the band’s “Shake It Up” album. I usually like to begin my workouts by “warming up” with songs that are a little on the mellow side. While “Since You’re Gone” probably wouldn’t fall into the “ballad” category, it is a little laid-back. It’s a little slow in parts, yet it’s also upbeat in other parts. For me, it’s a perfect tune to listen to while easing into my workouts.
If you’re a fan of The Cars, or even just a fan of music from the 1970s and 1980s, you’re probably familiar with some of their big hits that I’ve included on my list, such as “My Best Friend’s Girl,” “Shake It Up,” and “You Might Think.”
However, I also included some songs which weren’t popular that you may not recognize. Here are a few of them.
This one’s got great fun music that I love running and riding to. Plus, just look at the great encouraging song title: “Don’t Cha Stop.” The band sings “don’t cha stop, don’t cha stop, don’t cha stop” several times throughout the song and it always helps me keep moving.
“Up And Down” has a fantastic steady drumbeat throughout it that makes the song great to run, ride, and walk to. Try it. You’ll like it.
Like “Up And Down” above, this one has a nice steady drumbeat throughout it. It’s also very heavy on fun, infectious (in a good way) keyboard playing by band member Greg Hawkes. It’s a great pop song that I also enjoy dancing to (when no one’s looking, of course.)
The next ones here were very popular songs from The Cars. They’re the final two songs on my playlist below.
It’s almost impossible for me to choose favorite songs from musical acts, but “Tonight She Comes” may be my favorite song from The Cars. It’s got fantastic vocals and music and it makes me feel good every time I hear it.
The drums and keyboards are great right from the beginning. There’s also a wonderful guitar solo from lead guitarist Eliot Easton that always makes me move faster whenever I hear it.
“Tonight She Comes” always motivates me and helps me push myself harder during my workouts. I absolutely love running and riding to it.
And then comes the “cool down” song to wrap it all up with.
“Drive” is another one of my favorites by the band. It features their late singer and bass player Benjamin Orr on lead vocals. The song is a beautiful ballad and it’s a great one to slow myself down with as I ease out of my workouts.
Here’s the complete playlist. It features 18 songs and is just slightly over one hour long.
I’m going to listen to it now while I work out. Care to join me?
