Let Freedom Ring
Not so fast, buster

I bet you think by the title that this is going to be about Joe Biden — and the great United States of America — and all that happy patriotic stuff. Not quite. I’m a student of American History. I know stuff other people don’t. Ya know…like how we started a war with a weak southern neighbor just to steal half their land. But I digress. That’s not what this is about. This is about my freedom!
So today is November 9th, 2020, a year and a day since I left federal prison. Given that I was given one year of probation, I should be free today — and able to travel anywhere in the world (except Canada and England, both of which don’t allow entry to US felons).
But thanks to a brain-dead state bureaucrat who didn’t know the meaning of the word “concurrent,” I was wrongfully locked up for 18 more days at Rikers Island. And thus, my federal probationary period didn’t commence until the day I reported — which was 11/26/19 — owing to my being detained at a city jail.
In truth, another 18 days of probation isn’t going to kill me. But my extra confinement (of sorts) is a grim and irritating reminder of just how inefficient governmental bureaucracies truly are. I don’t know what’s worse. The bureaucracy itself…or the bureaucrats who muddle through a ponderous and inefficient system.
I could bore y’all with thousands of words detailing the mind-boggling haplessness which for me, defines our government. But I can’t right now. The New York State Department of Labor has completely fucked up my legitimate unemployment insurance claim…and I have to call them to rectify their errors.
In fact, I’ve called at least 20 times prior to today. And each and every time, I’ve navigated through several prompts only to have a recorded voice tell me they’re too busy. Call back another time. And there isn’t an office to which I can report.
Business as usual in the good ol’ US of A. The old SNAFU. What are ya gonna do?
