Let a Child In
an Italian Sonnet
You let a child in, he’ll break your heart He’ll find the string and ravel it away No discipline can make a child stay When he decides it’s time to break apart It’s best to steel yourself right from the start Resist the urge to laugh and sing and play For he’ll find folly futile one fine day And that’s the day your heart will tear apart
But if to my request your ears fall deaf My warnings, mute, do fizzle in your soul Then you may find a special kind of joy That warms your heart and takes away your breath If weaving hope and life is still your goal You’ll find the key in smiles of girls and boys
