Lessons Learned From Fishing

Changing the trajectory of your future

I have only gone fishing once or twice in my life.

We decided to revive this experience when one of my kids discovered his new passion for fishing.

We learned quickly that fishing is harder than we thought.

We camped out on the dock and right in front of us in the water were some bluegill. This was the perfect opportunity to test out our new lures.

I was impressed by how not interested they were. We tried all kinds of bait. The intelligence of these fish was astounding.

They would nibble on some of the “real” tasty bait, but not enough to get them hooked.

The close-up view was a good vantage point to determine what kind of response we would get with a real cast.

Near the other side of the lake, our neighboring competitors were having all kinds of success.

We decided to try the golden spot that they were in previously. Jackpot! We could see at least twenty of them.

Although, we never had any luck that day.

Never ever give up

We were determined to have success. We moved on to other lakes and discovered that live bait is actually irresistible to not only bluegill but also largemouth bass.

This wasn’t accomplished in one day, of course, but over weeks and months.

My oldest son broke his record of catching the most fish in a day, sixteen. My other son was able to catch his first fish as well.

We could have given up on the first try. But we kept at it, finding new locations and trying different bait.

Had we not kept trying different places, we would have not found some amazingly beautiful pockets to fish in.

One spot, in particular, had lush green landscapes with huge trees. There were unmarked graves that existed at some point in the 1800s where we were.

Fishing builds traditions and relationships

It’s interesting, I have only been fishing once or twice in my life. I caught one rainbow trout when I was twelve years old. That was it. But, I was determined to change that.

I’m glad I can change the trajectory of this tradition. Also, I am trying to be supportive as possible for my two oldest boys’ love and passion for fishing. We went all-in with fishing gear and carved out the time to make it happen.

As I watched milestones take place in their lives, I realized I may have influenced the trajectory in this particular area. This influence may trickle down to the grandkids and beyond.

That’s the exciting part. You get to decide what types of traditions will influence the rest of your family and friends.

There are many lakes, locations, and uncharted territory to explore. There are also memories to make and relationships to build.
