Lessons Learned After Writing On Medium For 4 Months

Can you make money on medium?

Time sure flies. I started on medium in the middle of November 2021 and I can say that writing on medium has been a joy. I have learned quite a lot and I would like to share a few things that may help others. If you are new to medium, you’ll soon learn that everyone’s experience on this platform is unique. Here are a few takeaways from me:

  1. If you are wanting to make money from the medium partner program, keep writing. It’s not enough to write a few articles and wait for the article to go viral. You will need to be consistent, and aim to write several articles a day or up to 5 articles a week. Provide a nice title, and a photo.
  2. In my experience, writers who are new to medium want to read articles about getting followers. I wrote about my experiences about getting my first 600 followers, then my 1000 followers. If you can share your experiences about getting followers, and add a good title to the article, you will get lots of reads — I am sure of it.
  3. Writing for publications like this one is the best way to get more people to read your articles. Sign up for as many publications as you can. I notice that whenever I self-publish, my reads are lower than if it was in a publication. If you have submitted to a publication, make sure you follow their policies to prevent delays. I am grateful for publications that help make my articles get a wider reach.
  4. Don’t compare yourself with other people. Everyone has different experiences and your articles will reflect this. Some peoples’ earnings may be higher than yours because some niches are more popular with readers. Financial or business articles will get lots of reads. I wrote an article about how one can make money with Google Maps a few months ago, and it is still making me money. However, since I am not good with cryptocurrency or stocks, I am sticking to what I know. So stay with what you know and you will have no problem writing it.
  5. Earnings can fluctuate. I wrote fewer articles in January and more articles in February, and yet for some reason, I earned less money last month. There is no magic bullet or template that will help people earn more money each month. I believe that engaging and reading other members’ articles will also help you gain more followers and readers within the community.
  6. People love to read earnings reports. My article about my January earnings got some impressive views. So if you are willing to write about your experiences on medium and share your earnings report, go for it. People are naturally curious and I am always astounded at the amount of money people are making after spending up to a year or more on medium. Others have spent less time on medium and made an impressive sum. My advice to you is to check out medium’s top writers to discover their niche topics and which articles have lots of reads.
  7. Stay focused. Although my earning income was a bit disappointing for February, I will take this as a learning experience. I am always motivated by reading other articles which tell writers to keep writing, stay focused, and keep realistic objectives.
