Summary

Krissy Cela shares her personal insights on the importance of a long-term mindset, structured workout plans, and self-acceptance in the fitness journey.

Abstract

Krissy Cela's fitness journey emphasizes the necessity of viewing fitness as a lifelong commitment rather than a short-term goal. She highlights the transformative power of exercise on both physical and mental well-being, stressing the importance of consistency and a positive mindset. Cela advocates for a structured workout plan to achieve physical progress, suggesting that a systematic approach to training leads to better results. She also warns against the pitfalls of comparing oneself to others, noting that each individual's body responds uniquely to exercise and diet. Instead, she encourages self-compassion and personal growth, celebrating one's own achievements and viewing fitness as a personal challenge.

Opinions

  • Fitness is not just about physical transformation but also about cultivating a resilient mindset.
  • Goals are important, but the focus should be on creating sustainable systems and habits.
  • Progressive overload, training with intent, and focusing on foundational movements are key components of a successful fitness regimen.
  • Consistency and the commitment to improve are more important than the pursuit of perfection.
  • Comparing oneself to others is unproductive; each person's fitness journey is unique.
  • Personal satisfaction and pride in one's own efforts are essential for maintaining motivation and enjoying the fitness process.

Lessons I Learned on My Path to Fitness

Lesson 1: This is a forever game.

Your fitness journey won’t last long if you start with the expectation of simply losing a few pounds or on the basis of only changing physically.

Your mindset needs to shift from “how long” to “I have always” in order to accomplish anything you want to achieve. Whilst goals are great they are not the be-all /end-all.

Working out completely transformed me and improved the quality of my life, Krissy explains, moving my body is so much more than gaining muscle and progressing, it's the mindset to never give up on yourself, to get up even when you don’t want to or feel like it because you made a commitment with yourself.

These transformations you see online and mine too, took years of learning and applying, it didn’t happen overnight, she adds.

Lesson 2: If you want to see physical progress then have a structured workout plan.

I used to do totally random workouts I’d find with no consistency whatsoever, it wasn’t until I had set a program that I saw the most physical progression, Krissy explains.

This is having as James Clear likes to say: “systems” or in other words structures.

Setting that clear structure enables you to stay consistent with specific movements whilst progressively overloading.

Your body naturally adapts to everything, so it will adapt to these systems, that's why it's important to develop and follow a plan that pushes you, encourages you to also try new things while perfecting the foundations.

Always remember:

  • Add progressive overload.
  • Training with intent.
  • Focus on foundations.
  • Find ways to stay consistent.
  • Aim to do better each time.

Lesson 3: You can compare yourself all day long but you will never be that other person.

The before and after pictures we see online, on social media, are by-products of the constant work and effort all of these folks have put in to get into that shape.

You might see this and compare your results to others but the universal truth is that you can eat the same, train the exact same way, and you won't look the same as them because everybody’s body reacts differently, so don’t waste your time with comparisons, practice saying I am happy for them and also give yourself some credit for all your hard work, be proud and contented with your own journey too.

Remember you need to be your own cheerleader.

It’s not you against others, it’s you against yourself. That's what I love about working out, it's my personal commitment, it's my own personal challenge.

It's my absolute me time and even though at times I’ve felt out of place at the gym, I still have managed to continue to show up and I am absolutely loving the results, mentally and physically.
