29 lessons learned in 29 days

Lesson 6 — Be Organized in Your Life

Especially if you want a publication to publish your stories.

Everything is said, right? | © Designed by Kainos.

A few days ago, I successfully completed my 29-day writing #KainosChallenge. I’ve shared 29 lessons I learned during the challenge on the 29th day of writing. Today, I’m going to develop lesson 5,

If you are relying on a publication to publish your story, you need to be organized. — Me, Gabriel (Kainos)

Why do you need to be organized?

For this lesson, it’s really simple. During my challenge, I wanted to publish one story a day. And I wanted it to be in a publication.

Whether it was Jason Provencio’s Bouncin’ and Behavin’ Blogs or Dr Mehmet Yildiz’s ILLUMINATION publications (for example), I had to take into account the time it takes editors to review and publish. Knowing that this is a free service for Medium members, we can’t be too demanding.

Therefore, you need to make sure that there is enough time between the time you submit your story and the time you expect your story to be published.

I repeat: publication owners and editors do not get paid for publishing your stories. So don’t expect them to do the impossible for you. They don’t have to (but most of the time, they’ll do their best).

It happened a few times during my challenge that I submitted my story in the morning (in France) and it wasn’t published until the next day. I was a bit upset, but it can happen. However, my challenge was respected as I finished a new story every day.

The lesson: Be an organized person.

You can apply this lesson to all kinds of activities. Not just about writing on Medium.

For example, I’m going to an event tomorrow night. I had to schedule my haircut for today one week ago. You see? It’s not a big deal. But it allows me to be presentable tomorrow and not look like a person who stuck his finger in a socket. If I hadn’t planned this, can you imagine the stress of getting a haircut in a hurry?

It helps to be organized. It makes things go smoothly and not have to deal with an unplanned event. The thing is to always be prepared for the unplanned.
