Lesson 13 — Forget Motivation and Be Passion Driven Instead

If you rely on motivation only, you’ll quit.

Motivation gives you a momentary boost. Passion drives you all the way. | © Designed by Kainos.

A few days ago, I successfully completed my 29-day writing #KainosChallenge. I’ve shared 29 lessons I learned during my challenge on the 29th day of writing. Today, I’m going to develop lesson 13,

Don’t rely on your motivation, but on your desire to progress. — Me, Gabriel (Kainos).

The Motivation Myth

There is a misconception about motivation. Some people feel that they have to be motivated to do something. So they will try to force motivation to come.

The problem with this belief is what happens if the motivation doesn’t come. What do you have to rely on?

As I write this story, I have zero motivation to do so. I have been putting it off all day. Why is that? Because I don’t really feel like it. I would rather watch videos on YouTube 😂.

So if I relied on motivation alone, you wouldn’t be reading this story today. Because, I repeat, I have no motivation to do it.

So you will probably ask me:

“Ok Kainos, why are you writing then?”

That’s a good question, buddy. Let me put it this way: because I want to progress.

You see, if I didn’t write, there would be no progress for today. Not only that, but I have challenged myself to write the 29 lessons I learned in my previous 29-day writing challenge. So if I don’t publish this 13th lesson, I can’t continue writing the others.

The lesson: your desire to progress is stronger than motivation.

It seems that my current situation is a good opportunity for you to understand today’s lesson.

Motivation comes and goes. Sometimes you feel like writing 3 stories a day. And sometimes you feel like never writing again and start a new project.

Relying on motivation makes you unstable. Focusing on your desire to progress to overcome your lack of motivation is the key to actually doing what you need to do.

Whether you’re writing, making videos, or completing your secret project, you can’t just rely on motivation. You have to rely on something more powerful: desire to progress, passion.

What criteria do you rely on to keep writing, reading, or your other projects going? Let me know in the comments 💬.

Sincerely yours,
