Less than 30 Views, $0.19 Earnings to 1,000s of Views & 100s of Dollars
Why You Should Keep Writing Even If Nobody Cares
There is hidden power in being ignored and not making anything when you first start so stick around and find out!
I have been publishing at least one article every single day since November, the month that I rejoined Medium after an over-year-long hiatus.
Nothing happened for weeks, I mean, nada.
In November, my total reads and earnings were:
Reads: 29
Earnings: $0.19
By Christmas, I had published over 60 articles but my reads and earnings ratio were still the same.
A bit sad but yet I was glad to have made something because the $0.19 showed me that it is possible to make money just by practicing writing in public.
I knew I wouldn’t get traction for at least 6 months to a year… Even Medium legends like Eve Arnold and Alex Mathers were ignored during their first year on Medium.
Few are like Bin Jiang or Carl Jeffers who hit a full-time income in less than 3 months.
I want to say that it didn’t matter but it hurt my confidence a little when my hard work was being ignored. It’s normal.
Confidence rises when we first realize and begin our new adventure and it becomes shaken when reality does not go as expected.
We are seldom granted what we want, not in the short term anyway.
Stats of the first month I was back, in November:

In the short term, instant gratification may dictate some of our actions.
In the long term, the rule of compounding reigns.
…I had an average of about 2 views per day but I kept on writing and publishing, even on days that I didn’t have a strong topic to write about.
Why?
Because it is just as important to complete our set goals as the act of setting goals itself.
Because that is the goal that I have set for myself. I have a vision of what I need to do and why I am on Medium.
As long as we have a vision of where we want to be, we are okay. No niche is needed. No inflexible plans. The power of playing by ear is too often underestimated.
As long as we have a vision we can run wild with our ideas, even when no one cares, even when we haven’t picked our top 2 or 3 focus.
It’s better to have nobody who cares in the beginning anyway because that means you have all the freedom to write and say whatever you want. Freedom without care gives our authentic voice a place to roam and develop.
When the audience shows up, we will have built a stronger belief in ourselves so much that we will naturally continue with our habit, making writing easier while attracting the right kind of audience.
By the end of 2023, I went from 60 views to 1k views in December, and then from 1k views to 2.3k views in January, pulling in a total of this much:

The sudden rise at the end of December was a nice surprise since I did not expect anything else but focusing on myself to keep writing and publishing.
I love writing, I cannot say I have always loved writing my whole life but I found that passion can be developed, just like patience, forbearance, consistency, and many other good traits.
