Lenticular Clouds And Peque Peques
The Word Collector — part 10
Regular readers will know that I love collecting new words, phrases, acronyms and sayings.
The following specimens have been collected this week for your perusal, pleasure and general divertissement.
Lenticular — funnily enough I picked this one up from the weather forecaster, who used it to describe an unusual cloud formation. It means lentil-like, though you have to know what a lentil is like for it to be a helpful description! You never know when you are going to find a good specimen like this.
Peque peque — this specimen is from Jay Griffith’s amazing book “Wild” which I am re-reading, as it is such a lexicographical feast. A peque peque is a type of boat, because of the sound of their engines… peque-peque-peque-peque….. you get the idea!
Chiasmus — a rhetorical or literary figure in which words, grammatical constructions, or concepts are repeated in reverse order.
Propitiate — win or regain the favour of (a god, spirit, or person) by doing something that pleases them.
Camphor — a white volatile crystalline substance with an aromatic smell and bitter taste, occurring in certain essential oils.
Synathaesia — the production of a sense impression relating to one sense or part of the body by stimulation of another sense or part of the body.
Volution — a rolling or revolving motion; a single turn of a spiral or coil.
Gadroon — a decorative edging on metal or wood formed by parallel rounded strips (reeding) like inverted fluting.
Hierophant –I picked this specimen up during my research into tarot cards — it means a person who brings religious congregants into the presence of that which is deemed holy.
Arcana — secrets or mysteries — another term used in tarot.
Rebar — reinforcing steel rod used in concrete.
Shuck — verb — to remove the shucks (outer shell) from for example maize, peas, or shellfish.
Maven — an expert or connoisseur.
A.C.E — an acronym for adverse childhood experience — I guess we have all been there!
