Lemony with Bits of Blueberries

a breakfast poem

I made you breakfast scones, lemony with bits of blueberries, no sweet icing to steal the show, just crumbly dough that asks to be warmed and slathered with butter, served beside a mug of coffee or Earl Grey tea, eaten as the sun inches up the sky while on the porch or in the garden if it’s spring or summer, or in your favorite chair, wrapped in a cozy blanket, if there’s frost on the meadow or snow clinging to the pines.

I made you breakfast scones, lemony with bits of blueberries.

I’ve been baking a lot. Captain Argentina and I used to enjoy sweets from a local bakery. But, when my gluten allergy exploded, I needed to limit my wheat consumption drastically. No more bakery sweets for me. The Captain felt sad enjoying pastries for breakfast while I had a boring bowl of gluten-free cereal. That’s how I became a baker, exploring gluten-free or mostly gluten-free recipes that we can enjoy together — cakes, cookies, popovers, and, of course, scones. I post my baking adventures on my publication In My Life. The lemon blueberry scones didn’t make it to publication because I wasn’t satisfied with the photos I took. That doesn’t mean they weren’t delicious! Next time, I’ll get better photos.
