Learning to Trust Your Gut with Your Writing Ideas

Don’t dismiss those random ideas that pop into your head

I just got a crazy idea for a story — Image from Canva

I get ideas for stories everywhere — in the shower, listening to podcasts in my car, reading the newspaper, and in my day to day life. Sometimes I just get an inspirational thunder bolt out of the blue. Note: These ideas are the best kind.

Ideas are everywhere if you’re paying attention.

But the real challenge is — what do you do with them?

Do you let them pass by or do you record them for future consideration?

I always capture them no matter how crazy they seem in the moment. I record them in Notes on my iPhone or I write them down in my Ideas Notebook.

So now you have all those amazing ideas, how do you pick one to actually sit down and write about?

Here’s some thoughts.

  • Review your ideas regularly and see which ones really hit an emotional spark for you. Highlight or star them so you don’t overlook them.
  • Create a draft in Medium with a Headline, tagline and an eye catching main image. It’s good to have these drafty ideas waiting for you in your Medium list so you can pick one and start writing anytime. I have 38 right now in my Drafts list. How many do you have?
  • Go with the flow when you get an amazing idea for a story that scares and excites you. This is your gut telling you to go for it. Trust it and start writing and see where it leads.
  • Don’t let that wicked voice in your head tell you your ideas are crap. They’re not. Ignore that voice. Put it in the naughty corner and give it a time out!
  • Remember you are a creator, a writer and your voice can make a difference. You need to believe in yourself and what you write.

Key Message: Trusting your gut to create something that stretches and scares you means you’re moving forward in your writing journey.

So follow that yellow brick road and keep on going.
