Learning From The Sayings Of Confucius — A Complete Guide
Reflections on The Analects of Confucius
Part of my mission to write on Medium is to share Chinese culture for the worldwide audience. However, Chinese culture is such a big topic. I feel overwhelmed, to the point that I cannot even find a topic to begin with.
I was organizing my bookshelf this weekend, and it dawned on me that I have a complete collection of Chinese classic literature and philosophy, i.e. Confucius, Taoism, Buddhism, Yin-Yang, I-Ching, Tai-Chi, Tang poems, etc. Then I realize that there is no better start than with Chinese classics, such a wealth of wisdom and knowledge.
One cannot talk about Chinese culture without some understanding of the sayings of Confucius. Similarly, no one can discuss Western civilization without some reading of the Bible. Therefore, I am going to start with the sayings of Confucius.
This series of articles will contain the best translation of the sayings of Confucius (The Confucian Analects translated by James Legge, freely available on Project Gutenberg), my personal readings and reflections, and the original Chinese text at the end.
I don’t want the articles to be shallow listicles flooding the web, such as 10 quotes of Confucius’ wisdom. I want my articles to be systematic and comprehensive. I cannot think of a better format than to follow Confucius’ sayings sentence-by-sentence. Each paragraph (or Chapter in Legge’s translation) in the Analects of Confucius will be the topic of an article for explanation and reflection.
I am not a scholar. I am a Chinese attorney working in the Beijing office of a large international law firm, so I have a busy day job. Hence, I don’t pose myself as any form of authority or scholar on Chinese classics. I don’t dig into specific word usage or historical context, and I don’t want to bore my readers with such scholarly exercise. Instead, I focus on the meanings and concepts conveyed by the sayings of Confucius, and I seek to make it relevant to modern life and work.
This article is the “Master Article”, which will be continuously updated, to collect all subsequent articles into one place so readers can find what they need easily.
Finally, I’d love to hear from you. Please graciously leave your comments, thoughts, and reflections in the response in any of the articles. The more interactive, the better.
