Learn How to Block Code on Medium

Plus, let’s talk earnings.

You know that neat little gray box some folks use in their writing on Medium?

It’s called block code, but trust me, you don’t need to code.

It took me forever and a day to figure it out. I didn’t know what to search for.

But the truth is, all you have to do is type ``` three times and it just appears!

I don’t know what that symbol is called. It might be a type of punctuation. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I call it the backwards apostrophe. 🤣

You can find it on the top left corner of your keyboard, sharing a key with the tilde or ~.

Hi, I am a block code. I exist to bring more fun to your writing. Use me sparingly and intentionally. Often, I am used as a table of contents or at the end of articles. You can put your CTA (or call to action) in me!

I am always learning new tips and tricks about Medium to elevate my writing, even if it’s something small.

In your block code, you can include links and emojis. You can also play with spacing.

I think it’s a great way to embed a handful of articles you think your reader may enjoy next.

Before ‘lists’ on Medium was so widely used, I would include a block code at the bottom of all my writing resources articles. I did this to try to keep the reader engaged. I hoped they wanted to learn more!

Learning How to Write on Medium Doesn’t Happen Over Night

For the majority of people, it takes a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to make it into the ‘hundreds club.’

There are rumors that claim only around 7 or 8% of writers in the MPP earn at least $100 per month here.

To be honest, I have tried to do research on this for the sole purpose of boosting my own self-esteem.

I couldn’t find anything legit.

So if you’re failing to see traction, please, don’t stop. Remember why you started writing in the first place.

Remember how good writing makes you feel. Enjoy it!

Learn From My Mistakes

When I started on Medium, it was way, way easier to go viral and make lots of money in a short period of time. I totally wasted an opportunity to make it big on this platform because I didn’t know the algorithm would change so rapidly and favor the “top 1%” or whatever.

Within my first two months on the platform barely knowing what I was doing, I earned $227. That was in March 2020.

I got too comfortable, messed up, and disappeared for a while. By the time I got back, I had to work 5x as hard to make the same amount I made 2 years ago. Back then, I probably had around 100 followers and now I have nearly 2.5k! Oh, how times have changed.

What Can We Do?

Decide if you want to roll with the punches and wait for the Medium algorithm to improve.

If you truly love writing, you will likely stay.

Besides, it’s the best place I could find on the internet to get paid for my work in this fashion.

Tit for tat, right?

I would love to hear about your best month on Medium so far and what you did to achieve your personal best results!

Although, I’ve learned to not get so caught up in the numbers anymore, and to just keep writing…

Best,
